Some of the recipients of my fall pickle batch got me some seeds for my Christmas stocking at work (not knowing I'm seed-phobic Very Happy ).

Just planted some radishes (Rax), radishes (white icicle, short top), radishes (salad rose) and some carrots (kaleidescope)........ all from seeds affraid

...and yes, I followed the directions and did "direct sow" this time ... cheers

Think I'm just bored & killing time until tomato season ..... errrr

Acara,

What nice friends. Now you are getting lots of experience growing from seeds. cheers

I loved the kaleidescope carrots. They were sweet and so cute in their variety of colors. The red and purple were my favorites, but we still enjoyed the white and yellow. They took a lot longer here, but everything took longer to grow due to the cool damp weather this past year.

Looking forward to pictures of your babies.

This is probably kinda funny for you pro's ...... but I didn't know how different the types of seeds could be.

Almost missed the dang carrot seeds in the pack ...... those are some tiny critters ..yeesh.

No pro here (and I am waiting as we speak for reading glasses from the eye doc!!!) but you could always mix the little seeds with some sand or vermiculite etc to make it easier to distribute.

They also sell little pill popper things for measuring seeds, but I am way too cheap to buy one of those :-)

Here, Here....or is it Hear, Hear? Either way you're right! No matter how careful you are, you'll still have to thin them. I find it easiest to wait till they're pushing two inches. It makes it easier to see the individual plants.

and you'll be glad you planted the radishes...

they jump out of the ground and grow quickly -- it's a little instant gratification in the off season!

I planted radishes amongst my carrots until the tops were so big they completely shaded out the radishes and the carrot harvest we just got didn't have any carrot fly maggot damage! Last year we got a scraggly harvest of pretty badly damaged carrots, so I'm ecstatic. I wouldn't have planted radishes because no one in my family likes them, but I sure plant them now Smile

I let one of my radishes keep growing, just to see what would happen... and I got an amazing, 4 foot tall plant with beautiful little fuchsia-colored flowers.

Wow, really? The carrots shaded the radishes out before they got a chance to get that big.

Yep. By that point the root was pretty much a mess (something got into part of it) but I just let it keep growing. A couple others started to bolt, too, but I pulled them before they got really huge. I think for eating you would want to pull them before they bolt. I really liked these White Hailstones. The greens were good, too.

They are a bit ungainly looking, but I'm glad I tried it. I remember the blooms being much darker than shown in the photo. Very Happy

Had the itch to plant some wierd stuff Empty update

Post  acara 2/1/2011, 7:50 pm

Took a peek at the the radishes today & my "30-day" crop is running about 10 days behind in growth (suspect it's due to the crazy temp oscillations from 28-75F over the last month).

Carrots seem to be progressing okay, but really not much to look at at this point.

I can't tell much difference yet from the direct-sow vs peat-pellet w/ mesh vs peat-pellet w/o mesh .... but should know something in another week I guess.
