Seafood Shell Composting Ideas?
Hi Folks,
Please share your thoughts and ideas for composting seafood shells. so far I am collecting rinsed crab, mussels, clam, and shrimp shells. I know I have to crush and grind and add them in at some point.
Happy Composting!

Re: Seafood Shell Composting Ideas?
I would think good stuff! A nice addition to the pile. The best compost I bought this summer was a lobster compost from Maine. The shell pieces will compost slowly, crushing would help, and bits showing up in the garden are not a big deal. But if you don't want the bits in the garden, you could go the extra step and screen the compost.
Seafood Shell Compost
Ms. RN,
Thanks for your thoughts! I haven't decided on how to crush it yet. I think I'm going to collect it in an old 35 gal. trash can w/ lid out in the equipment shed. I'm worried the smell will invited all the cats, skunks, raccoons, and the likes to our yard. I'll work on the crushing issue after Christmas.
Shave those Lobster Tails!
Thank again,

Re: Seafood Shell Composting Ideas?
Oh, I should add that I think it would be ideal to incorporate the shells into a 'hot' compost pile to accelerate decomposition. Link
