Post  hartge01 12/14/2010, 11:41 am

Greetings all!

I have just started trying to vegetable garden. I figure I have a couple of months before any actual planing and have already started a 4x4 plot in my back yard with full sun. I have asked for both books my Mel for Christmas so I will also have some good reading during the "down time".

I am sure I will post often so I look forward to hearing from/meeting many of you.

Blessings,

Gary

Howdy Gary:

I was just in Maclenny, FL were I was raised and yep, it was cold. Gainsville weather is very simular to Macclenny's being only 60 miles North. When, as a family, we row gardened there we would push the weather man just a bit and plant on Feb. 14 unless the weather was colder then normal and we would wait until Feb. 28. We did have to replant on the rare year when a "late" frost hit, but, we allways had a large garden. I just wish that I knew about Square Foot Gardening then. If I had known I would not have been playing summer Santa Clause and "hoe-hoe-hoeing" all summer.

God Bless and Welcome to the Forum.
Ward and Mary.

Hey there Gary and welcome.

I'm new to all this as well and excited for Spring. :!:

Congrats on the 4 x 4 being set up, you are ahead of me. (I have a LOT of work to do clearing and cleaning out a "backyard" area.)

You and me both, GardenZen! Hard to get motivated when it's so darn cold out there, too. And now hubby's motorcycle is parked in the middle of the backyard, to boot. Sigh.

SFGardners also ask for things like vermiculite and rampicante squash seeds for Christmas and birthdays.

"All I want for Christmas is some coarse vermiculite, some coarse vermiculite, yeah, some coarse vermiculite. All I want for Christmas is some coarse vermiculite, so I can have a Mel-type garden!" (sung to the tune of "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.")

Welcome aboard! I assumed Florida grew year round, even in the north-ish areas. I thought you would just cover plants in colder weather? But, hey, what do I know? I'm a bit farther north...lol.

I would, however, be interested in hearing from some Floridians as to if you can get year round with covers and hoop houses? Granted, that may take a little experience, but it may be good to know just how far you can stretch your growing season for future plans.

Hello from sunny, ugh, cold Florida Empty regional forums

Post  ander217 12/29/2010, 3:00 am

BBG, you might also want to check out the regional forums for the lower and coastal south. There may be some threads posted there to answer your questions.

You can also use the search feature, although at this time it only searches thread titles, and not individual posts.
