What can be planted now in Austin, TX?

We are traveling to Austin this week to spend T'giving with our daughter, and we will also be doing Christmas gifts while we're there.

Our daughter requested two SFG boxes as her gift from us this year. (Yay!)Hubby finished making two 2' x 2' x 12" boxes for her yesterday, the size she requested since much of her lawn is shady. We will be taking rice hulls to fill the lower 4" of the boxes, and she will make Mel's Mix for the remainder. (She wanted the boxes deep in case she wants to grow potatoes or long carrots.)

Can vermiculite be purchased there at this time? Where? She has a large compost pile so no problem with that. I remember there was a discussion about a different MM recipe for growers in Texas. Should she follow the original directions for her first boxes?

She wants to get started planting something now if possible. Does anyone know if anything can be planted now in the Austin area? Her daughters love brussels sprouts. When should they be planted in her region?

I don't know for certain, I'm a couple hundred miles north, but I'd bet she might get away with planting the crucifers - beets, broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, etc.

When I told Mom I knew exactly where this was because it's in the same building where I got my tattoo, I think I made her head explode.

I've gotten my Ladybug brand mix and my current plants at Red Barn, just because it's super close to my house. I usually buy my herb seedlings at Whole Foods, so once they get their selection up and running I'm probably going to replant my flowerbed. Maybe we should just bite the bullet and put in the SFG grids, because we always have problems with weeds coming up amongst the plants.

Have you been using the weed barrier? That should help considerably.

Weed barrier helps allot, I put it down under all my beds. For plants I like to travel. So far Bloomers in Elgin is my favorite. I have had some good items from Red Barn and Counrtywide just down the street from Red Barn. I find that Whole foods to be a bit pricey for their plants.

As far as planting, I have Onions and Salad greens growing. Both did fine with the Freeze, so warm out there I am tempted to put out a tom or two just to see if I can get them to stay. Broccoli and Cauliflower are probably my next adds though.
