camprn - thanks for the tip on the tomato vines! i was worrying about all of the bits i pulled and tossed in compost bin 'cause some looked 'icky' but i wasn't sure if they were sickly or just frosted from the cold.

it's always amazing to me come spring, even with no turning from me how my piles of compost in the back of the yard all shrink down and turn to 'dirt'. Smile

we bought an electric leaf blower last year just so we could add to our compost easily and blew all the leaves into the compost piles. *grin*

When they cleaned out the chicken house, I collected 1/2 a trash bag of manure/wood shaving mixture to add to my new bins. This is so super fresh now but I hope by next summer it will be ok for my garden(s). I've got 3 bins now, 2 for me and one for my son. Will be traveling back home on Tue to stir up my new mix. Kids are saving up from the chickens to till into their garden next spring. I had not focused on the fact that I would have a source of uncontaminated manure from them. rock on

Now-a-days there are warning lables on just about everything. Last year I bought a bag of "Chicken Poo" and on the bag it said, "Do not eat".

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

om goodness! you just had me literally laughing out loud! thanks for the giggles!

on a serious note, it's sad that our society has gotten to the point that obviously inedible items need to be labeled appropriately.

Post  walshevak 1/2/2011, 3:19 pm

My son didn't get to my house this weekend to help me build my boxes. Sad But, with 60 degree weather I had to get out into the yard. Started raking leaves and realized I had too many for my garbage can bins SOOOOOOO

bored old lady with hammer, swiss army knife, pallets, small stakes, weedcloth and empty cardboard boxes = new compost bin where an overgrown shrub used to be.

Yeah my tabletop boxes if I can ever get him to my house. With his family, college and p/t job that's not easy.

I found this Homemade Compost Tumber video on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfi-bSs6EQ0 and he also provides a plan on this link http://dixiegrilling.com/tumbler.htm

I hope it will be of some use to someone.

$18 compost bin - Page 2 Empty Cheap Compost Bin

Post  florenceq 1/25/2011, 5:10 pm

I made my compost bin out of a black 30 gallon trash can from Walmart. Cost about $10.00. I drilled several holes in the bottom (for drainage) and all around the can. My holes were only about 1/4 inch wide but I put a bunch of them all the way around the can. I opted for many small holes rather than larger holes that had to be covered with screen. After reading these post I may go back and added some spikes inside to help break up the compost. About once a week I bungee cord the lid closed and roll it around the yard. It been "cooking" for about 4 months now and it is starting to look like the real thing "COMPOST"! I plan to leave it until about April and then see if it is useable.
