Can pansies be direct-seeded into the garden in fall for spring blooms?

I transplanted pansies into my first SFG box with my earliest spring plantings. It would be nice if they could be direct-seeded now for early spring growth next year. I tried to check it out online but found conflicting information.

Has anyone tried this?
