Howdy Folks:

Two weeks ago Mary and I found a shipping crate behind one of the big box stores. The crate had sides, top and bottom made out of plywood sheeting 80 inches X 40 inches and ends of 48 inches by 48 inches. Behind the same big box store we found a stack of 6 foot long 2X6 used pine lumber. Our minds stirred. Today we built two 4X4 table top SFGs out of the free material and used mis-matched exterior grade paint that was $30.00 per gallon on sale for $5.00. The paint and a few screws were the only expenses for the two boxes. For the supports for the TT SFG we will use electrical cable spools that were also free for the taking. Keep your eyes open folks. Freebees are where you find them!

We also found 2 other shipping crates that measured 32 inches X 42 inches complete with 6 inch high sides and 1/2 inch plywood bottoms. While not exactly the same sizes you might build for a true SFG the plants will not notice.

Sheeting is not as durable as the 3/4 inch plywood that Mel talks about in his book, "ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening" and will last only two to three years, but, the price is right. Now what to do with the 40X80 inch'ers?

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

great find!

as for the large bits of plywood - perhaps a leanto is in your future for storing sfg materials to keep them out of the elements. Smile
