My son's pumpkin had the last word, peeew
Anybody ever carve into a rotten pumpkin? I knew something was not right, because the outside orange skin kept flaking. Then I stuck a knife into the pumpkin and it hissed at me. That should have been clue number two to stop carving the pumpkin, but I forged ahead after all my 4 year old was eagerly watching.Got the pumpkin open and the inside was covered in fur. Oh boy what a unique smell. Nobody else had a stuffy nose at our party, so I had to carve that pumpkin. It was very soft with almost no strings. After figuring out how to hold my nose and scoop pumpkin guts, it really wasn't the worst smell I have ever encountered. I am a parent. After very careful gut removal, (I was very concerned about going through the side of the pumpkin,) we started to carve the face. The pumpkin cracked. In all of my years of pumpkin carving I have never had a pumpkin crack. At this point I gave up. It was not meant to be. It went right out the door to the trash. I am not risking my compost pile with that toxic pumpkin. Fortunately we had a small pumpkin as a table decoration and it was alright. I think I should get the parent of the month award for that nasty pumpkin!!!

Poor Patty, what an experience and how noble of you to try to forge ahead for your 4 year old!
Hope the youngster was happy with a smaller pumpkin which did not smell.
Sorry, but I couldn't find a smiley holding it's nose.

Megan, you sure got me with that little bug in your post. I was wondering how the heck that bug got inside my screen  Good one!

Megan,
That bug in the screen was too funny!
Patty,
I probrably would have done the same thing with that pumpkin
It is always a good idea to have a backup plan - in this case backup pumpkin!
Have a Happy Halloween....

Hi,
Usually I have an extra pumpkin to carve for myself, but I did not get one this year. Let me tell you after this years smell-o-vision I will not make that mistake again. I am half way through roasting all of the pumpkin seeds from 8 pumpkins. I am roasting half for us and half for the birds. Ours are finished, tomorrow will be for the birds. Thanks for all of the commiserating.
