Hello

I would love to have a subsistence garden all year 'round. I am completing my education and will be searching for a job next year, and have decided I want to go where there is the possibility (or near possibility) of year-round vegetable gardening. Where in the US should I be investigating? (I can only hope the job outlook will be as favorable as the garden conditions!)

Howdy rawallison and welcome to the Square Foot Garden Forum and family.

While it is true that gardening year-round can be done almost anywhere the ground does not freeze (even there a green house may be an option) you might want to look at the areas around Orlando, Florida. Lots of sun, plenty of rain, and jobs can be found - check Google and see what the job markets are doing there.

God Bless and again Welcome, Ward and Mary.

You'll find the job market in Orlando to be a pretty difficult one. Unemployment is high, mortgage defaults are high, and things are tougher in Florida than in many other parts of the country.

Much as I love my home state, it's not somewhere I'd be looking to relocate right now.

Anywhere in Zone 9 or 10 and probably 8, too. I am in So Cal and am doing a year round garden. Hawaii is always good....

Southern Az is pretty amazing for year round gardening. During the summer it can be more difficult, but squash and melons love the heat! Housing is cheap right now, but employment not so great right now. There are jobs out there especially for those with skills, but they are harder to find. I think that is for anywhere you go though.
Good luck!

We're in the Central Valley in CA and have an average of 265 good gardening days per year, with the other 100 being just so-so. We think this is the BEST place to garden, but one of the worst for employment! A minimum two hour one way daily drive into the Bay Area will get you a great paying job, but you'll lose gardening time with the killer commute. We've decided that since the unemployment extensions have ceased and with no job prospects in sight we'll just live on our SS...and fully enjoy watching our gardens grow!

So since everyone also gave you great idea for locations.

What's your major and what kind of work are you looking for? What's your work experience?

Definitely could be some possibilities for you in Texas. Pretty healthy economy in most parts of the state, too.

this thread is very interesting to me - esp since we are planning to sell our house in august of 2013 and have been considering a move to either columbus, ohio or austin texas.

(columbus has #2 deaf school; austin has #3) but my endo, onc, and cardio docs all tell me if i want to grow older i need to live in milder, warmer climate. . .

seems to me that texas would fit that bill on so many levels AND i could grow more stuff, easier. . .

and knowing that the economy is solid helps a lot, too with this pending decision. we did discover the cost of living is similar to where i am now but there's a lot less taxes. . . and that would save us money, too.

very interesting thread. would love it if more folks shared their insights as well. . .

HF,
A couple notes of caution, not that I wouldn't welcome you to TX with open arms, but TX is notorious for allergies/hay fever so keep that in mind a bit. Also the heat is crazy during the summer and you need to expect to make some significant adjustments in planting timing. It was a real struggle at first for me to adjust from Nebraska planting timing to TX (and I still struggle a bit, missed doing fall peas this year because I was a bit burned out at the end of summer and just didn't get them in the ground).

I find myself having to make choices between crops because there is too much overlap between some crops and my planned successions didn't work. My planned pea spot was still taken up by melons.

That said, it really is possible to grow something year round down here and even more so in the Austin area, so go for it!

odd duck (btw, LOVE your screen name!)

will definitely keep the allergy factor in mind - we already have ragweed/hay fever/etc allergies, so it seems as though those scripts for clariton, etc will continue there.

thanks so much for your reply!

i'm more on track for moving to tx, but the husband is on teh fence about it - but if we can get jobs lined up before the move, then it will be a definite go. and i'm sure they will need ASL interpreters in TX. Also, by then, I'll have my SFG teaching certification - just need to do the video part now . .. and can do that on the side as well. Smile 'cause i'm gonna be gardening in the front yard again. .i can see it already. only every year i get better at planning out how to do my garden so it's more aesthetically pleasing to passersby. . and still very productive.
