Holiday in Maderia
Hi
I just come back from Maderia, what an experience on how they garden/farm with-out any help from machinary, horses etc, its all back-breaking work but where the land is cultivated on serious slopes. How they get the harvest from the land and then carry it all the way up the slopes. And we complain about gardening at times.
When I have the photo taken of my camera to computor I will try and post the pictures to this site!

Re: Holiday in Maderia
We visited Madeira as well last year and I was also very impressed with the use of space in small gardens and the back breaking work on the slopes! I also took pictures, but can't seem to find them at the moment.
Apparently the lava soil is very fertile and the climat gives so much warmth, that even without direct sun light, crops grow perfectly. In many places, they plant grapes and let the plant grow over something like a pergola though only about 140cm high, the grapes hanging down under a roof of leaves (litterally). Under this roof of leaves they plant other crops that, despite the lack of sunshine on the leaves, grow fast because the roof creates somthing like a glass house effect. Warm and quite humid.
