Root, Fruit, or Leaf Crop: Your Favorite and Why
My vote goes to the root crops like turnips and beets. They are easy to grow and they never need staking. Many of them have greens which are edible. If planted at the same time, they will all mature at about the same time;this allows the gardener to introduce a new crop right after harvest. The root crops tend to fill me up better than, say, lettuce. More than anything else, they are a mystery. You never really know what you have until you have pulled it up. I plan to plant many types of plants but I am heavily leaning towards the root crops.

hard vote
That's a hard question, but if I could only grow one thing in my garden it would have to be tomatoes. You cannot buy a good-tasting tomato in the store IMO. So I guess my answer is fruit.

Same-same ...
Tomatoes are the reason ....
Cukes are just plain fun ... and pickles don't exactly suck either
Bell peppers are required, to appease the Mrs .... who approves the funding

My DH built my two beds strictly for tomatoes and collards... I go for anything that grows !!

Tomatoes have it have it hands down! They just taste so different from store bought ones. I love the other stuff too but they all take a back seat to tomatoes.

I don't think that I can choose. Growing potatoes was such a fun experience...definetly will do it again. But tomatoes are one of my absolute favorite foods. And I love corn on the cob. Maybe I am just too new at it to decide. Or maybe it's regional? I have lived in the southwest most of my life (have only lived in Idaho since June 09) and root crops are not native in the southwest. I have never had a turnip or a beet. Peppers and tomatoes are prominent there along with oranges and avacados. So...shrug...maybe as I widen my food experience the answer may change.

I guess the fruits will win for me. Tomatoes (if they decide to grow for you with the lack of heat here), sugar snap peas are great raw in salads or steamed for just a minute or two, pole beans, bush beans, cukes, and lovely artichokes. Leaves and roots are great and I enjoy them, but fruits are really my favorites.

It's like picking a favorite child! Can't be done. I have been grateful for the Russian contingent in the house and have come to love and depend on borscht. But who can beat a fresh tomato or ear of corn? As for leafy, those are just starting so I'll let you know...
