Madisyn (DD) and the Walking Onions
We went to one of the last farmer's market's of the season here last week and I bought some mint transplants and some other things. The guy had some walking onions and was telling me about them so I bought a set of them, mostly because the guy was WAY nice and they were $1. I had no idea my daughter over heard this conversation and must have been listening intently.
So yesterday morning I went out to repot the mints in containers and some other garden "chores"...my daughter comes running out of the house and she is screaming.."WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! Mom...(breathing hard) are you going to plant those walking onions?" I was a little confused at first cause I had completely forgotten I had bought that little bunch. So I said.."Er...uh...yeah, we can. Do you want to help me?" And she says "yea!"
So I go about getting everything potted up and then I filled a few gallon pots with MM and decided to put a couple per pot...this is for her not me...I'm not particularly excited about these little tiny onions right? But she is and I can humor her.
So then she says emphatically as she is jumping up and down..."I can't wait to see them walk mom! Let's hurry up I want to see them walk!" And then it hits me...she thinks we are going to plant these things and they are going to immediately DO something. Oh lord!
Try explaining WALKING ONIONS to your 5 year old! LOL

As gently as possible lol... they are so LITERAL!
I just said these are no different than other things we grow...they take time to "walk".

Speaking of walking onions, a complete stranger came to my gate recently and gave me a bag of these, complete with instructions! Can't wait to see them "walk!" (Well, grow.)
