Ohh ...where did that come from !!
I've never raised squash before, so I was a little surprised when I came out with my cup of coffee ...
I was used to the tiny little flowers that the tomatoes and cukes produce .... but this things as big as some of the hibiscus I have.
I'm sure everyone other than me has seen a squash blossum before .... but this is my first & kinda kewl

Re: Ohh ...where did that come from !!
It is such great fun, and a grand wonder, too!! Congratulations!!!
I get all excited when I see squash blossoms like that. (Made mine a bittersweet sight this morning, unfortunately, to see literally dozens of blossoms on my rampicante... )
Can you tell if that bloom is a male or a female? Males have skinny little stems, whereas the females have a miniature fruit in back of the blossom.

LOL... enjoy it, sweetie! Don't be too surprised if it falls off, that is pretty common when it first starts blooming.
One important note for the future: Squash blossoms close by twirling/twisting themselves shut. (Think: Hershey's kiss. Your hibiscus might do the same thing?) They can trap bees inside, so be careful if you are poking around closed blossoms.

No need to touch it -- yours is a male. Female squash blossoms have three or four stamens that look like little marbles in the center of the flower. To aid in fruit setting, when you get a female blossom, pull off one of the males, tear off the petal, and dab the male onto the female. OK I'm embarrassed myself, but it does work well. Some use a paintbrush, but that's too fussy for me.

I thought it was a male, but didn't have enough experience to say so for sure. Thanks for teaching us, Belfry!

Yep ..hibiscus does that ....
The blossum doesn't look like it will be around long, but I got some pics so I''m happy.
belfrybat (or anyone) ...do I have to hand-pollenate squash?? Or are they fine if I've got normal bee/butterfly traffic in the gardens?

Kinda like teaching someone how to tell which of the new litter of puppies are male or female. LOL!

If you have lots of bee activity, they will take care of it, but for the first couple of female blossoms you might want to hand pollinate just to get that initial exciting harvest. Once you have plenty of both male and female blooming at the same time, let the bees do the work. Around here the bees have been scarce, so I hand pollinated two or three mornings a week.

That is absolutely beautiful!!! I want to plant a squash just for the flower like that. Isn't that amazing how butiful the nature is. All you have to do is sit down and enjoy the show.
