What KIND of wood did you make your boxes out of? - Page 2 Empty wood staining and painting

Post  maryseely 3/27/2011, 8:41 pm

Thanks Gwynn,
I have resisted painting them for 2 years since I wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Now I know...Oiling is a great idea. I think I'll try that so as to keep them for a longer time.
Yeah so sorry the white oak is so cheap around here. It is pretty crazy! I love oak anyway, so when my husband, Steve, brought home the lumber and told me what it was my reaction was about like yours, "Yikes! use that for a raised bed???"

We used pine and painted it white with exterior grade paint. However, if you want a wood look, try sealing it with a deck sealer to make it last longer.

My thoughts were that I hope it lasts a few years at least, but if it starts to break down after that, I can invest more into it. I'm just starting up, so first, I want to make sure the gardening thing "sticks" and second, the start up costs are more significant now because you're buying all the mel's mix stuff. In the future, you can re-use your mix and just replace the box if you have to.

Hi,
The crayon box gardener had to speak up. My boxes are 2x6 painted bright blue, yellow and red. Some of the older ones lasted 6-7 years before they needed to be replaced. I also have 1x6 beds, again painted loud primary colors, plus land scape timbers and old fence. My garden is a bright and cheerful place. I like to be there. I will be adding a small box this year. I had not planned on doing that, but the box should make it easier to mow, I also have some scrap from taking apart old boxes. If the wood is still good, into the garden it goes. Happy gardening.
