Harvested what I could before Earl arrives tomorrow.

We in Maine are battening down for Earl tomorrow. They keep changing his route from over southern Maine to off the outer eastern banks of Maine. I try to prepare for what might come if they are wrong so....

Here are the 3 watermelon that seemed ready. From front to back, 7.5, 8, and 15 pounds of Sugar Baby. The 14-pounder I harvested 2 days ago was very tasty and ripe. I know they should avg 8-10 lbs, but my first 2 outdid themselves in growth.

And here are the other things I harvested while I was at my community garden. Two Soleil summer squash, a Bush Baby Zucchini, and several Black Cherry tomatoes. The Black Cherry toms picked 2 days ago are now roasting in the oven so I can freeze them. I'll use some of today's for salad and the rest I'll roast in a couple of days.
And in the home garden....

Here's the 3 Honey Crisp apples from my dwarf tree, the only apples I got this year from trees planted last year. There's also some Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes. We eat these every day like snacks, they are so tasty. Sweet with a bit of oomph! The 2 toms in front are the only Green Zebra I'm going to see this year. I planted the seedlings in my perennial bed where there isn't as much sun as they really need. It was an experiment. Now I know they can't produce well there so I'll put them in my SFQ next year.

Good luck! Things are sounding more promising, but I do think it was smart to harvest rather than risk losing all of it.

ALright Ladies. hope the weather brings nothing but rain to your gardens! I am soooooooo hoping for rain.

Earl couldn't be any worse than an average nor'easter could it?

I was hoping to get at least a sprinkle, but nothing. We are so terribly dry here

We're still waiting.
A nor'easter happens when there are no leaves on the trees and doesn't swamp the root areas of trees with water so they are less apt to topple as they can and do during a hurricane. Its the wind in the leaves and the wet ground that makes trees so unsafe.
Earl's been downgraded again so maybe we'll just get some showers during the nite. I hope so.

By the way, the Honey Crisp apples are delicious. I like them 2nd to Granny Smith now.

Your harvest is lovely!!! Next year I hope to grow some mini watermelon and eventually I would like to get an apple tree and try growing them espaliered on the fence. I love Honey Crisps but don't know how they would do in my zone.

Your cherry tomatoes look lovely. I didn't grow any of the cherry ones this year. Last year I had tons of them and we ate them like snacks too. I had so many I took them to work and left them in a bowl on the counter by the cash register. Customers loved them.
