Garden acting strange??? Empty Garden acting strange???

Post  flintlock28 9/2/2010, 9:40 pm

Here in Wilmington Delaware, I have noticed that my Garden has seemed to enter into a "Suspended animation" like state. What I mean, is that before three weeks or so ago, my Garden was doing wonderfully, but it seems to have put the brakes on, as far as growth. Tomatoes, Watermelons, Carrots, just don't seem to increase in size, or new growth. The only thing that is still growing like crazy, is the Basil, and the California Peppers (the peppers took forever to get up to speed, but have been doing awesome lately)

Everything else looks fine, but just doesn't want to grow. The Sugar baby watermelons were growing every day, and then about three weeks ago, their size has stayed about the size of a Grapefruit, and just won't get any bigger. The funny thing is, that co-workers of mine, and family members have stated the same thing...everything was going great until about three weeks or so ago.....with their gardens also.

Everything looks completely healthy. No browning or wilting, or any other problem I can find...... I even tried using Miracle Gro for vegetables as a last resort, but to no effect.

Anybody have any ideas???/

Mine did that earlier this year. I am new to SFG, but my best guess is it seemed to be related to the temperature. My watermelon and pole limas have been "on hold" for the longest time, and are finally starting to show signs of life. I expected it from the limas, but not from the watermelon.

Garden acting strange??? Empty Me too

My garden did that earlier in the year, and neighbors had the same thing happen. No idea what caused it. Some of my plants came out of it and started growing again, while others never did so well. I have a lemon marigold that grew to three inches high, and then stopped growing. It has just sat there the entire summer with tiny little leaves. It looks like a bonsai.

Maybe it knew the hot summer was coming and decided to save itself for cooler weather. Smile

The weather has been pretty consistently hot.... I think the only difference was that before vacation, I was watering for 5 minutes or so in the morning, and then again near dusk, for 5 minutes. When we went on vacation, my relatives stopped by every couple of days, and watered once....... I'm wondering if this shocked the plant, and threw everything off????

My cabbage was planted along with everything else this spring (late April) and is only now starting to grow. My theory on that one is that it's reacting to change of the length of the day. (And that is just my pet theory... I have no idea!)

You could be unto something....I was thinking the same thing, but I wonder why so abrupt the change?

I don't know how abrupt it was... I haven't made a habit of specifically looking at it every day. It was one of the very few things I sprouted indoors, and it was long, pathetic and gangly (3 inch shoot, a couple mm wide) for the LONGEST time. Eventually put out a few true leaves, but looked just pathetic... flopped over and like it was going to die. Then one day recently I turned around and it was almost 9" tall and acting like it might have a microscopic marble-size "head" in there.

I do think it started growing faster recently, though. That bed is starting to be survival of the fittest!
