If you can't find Vermiculite.....
Hi everyone
I'm new here and new to gardening as well as Square Foot Gardening. I thought this would be the best place to ask, and I'm sorry if someone did it before (and I'm pretty sure this did happen
).
I've made dozens and dozens of phone calls trying to find Vermiculite but it was a waste of time. I just can't find it anywhere. Is there something else I can use in place of it?

first let us know where you are from as we can probably find you a source. Get specific with calling too. Ask for the Stronglite horticultural vermiculite by Sungro. I get mine from a feed store that has Purina products. Apparently any Purina Dealer can get it through their Purina Distribution Center when they ask for it by name.

HappyMommy...
When you sign into the General SFG forum threads up at the top of the page are three main subtopics...One of those has info concerning differing places some folks have located Vermiculite It's titled "Vermiculite Sources and Information"..Also another thread in the General SFG forum is titled "150 Nationwide Sources"..
It has a link of a spreadsheet in another forum which someone has put together listing about 150 places across North America to find Vermiculite..
Nationwide Vermiculite Sources

Hi Happymommy,
Welcome to the forum. It's too soon to give up your search! If you were to give us a hint about where you're located, we might be able to help you more.
In the meantime, the forum software is new, and we haven't got everything as organized as we'd like. First, check your regional forum for titles that say 'vermiculite available'. Then check here in the general forum:
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/vermiculite-sources-and-information-f30/
last resort, check here:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0ApbWjhk4wOGKdGtUMTBTQVRuZFBnWG5HRkhEZ2tGX3c&hl=en
If you find a source that isn't on our forum, please post the info so we can add it to our list.

Re: If you can't find Vermiculite.....
Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm from Colorado Springs, CO
rds1955: I've already checked it and the closest place was Denver if I remember it right.
boffer: I'm going to check it out. ETA: I've lurked there too but didn't find anything that was helpful to me as far as where to find it.

I just researched a bit and found a local store that carries some Sungro products. I will call them tomorrow. Maybe they could order it?

couldn't hurt
absolutely give them a call. I have a few places with Sungro products. Strangely enough it's the local feed store that will get it for me instead of the local nursery.

Also check your local True Value or ACE hardware stores. Mine ordered it for me. Some have found it at insulation companies as well. Just make sure it's the coarse.
