Look HERE.

I would have to read that website very thoroughly, but in my entire experience, the lids are not re-usable. (Not trying to shoot the site down, just a warning that in most cases, this is a bad idea.)

You have used this type before? When you say in your experience? Or are you saying in general?

Have not used these lids before, and I am a beginning canner. I just have had it hammered in to me from a very young age that you never re-use lids. I would need it proved to me before I would try it.

Well that's the point really. These aren't your grandma's canning lids! LOL. It's a brave new world with new technologies.

Being as reticent as Megan, though, has anyone had any experience with them?

In a way, these ARE your grandma's canning lids... the old type with the glass lid and rubber ring. I know my grandma re-used the rubber rings, unless they were damaged or deteriorating. That's also the recommendation from this company.

I find this intriguing, but I'll just use new lids every time I can... and re-use lids for simple storage, like dried beans, etc.

I have done a bit of research on but I have no direct experience with this product. Here is a thread discussing these items. Interesting. http://ourcountryhaven.com/OCH3/index.php?topic=21376.0
I am a bit suspicious as these lids do not have any kind of USDA rating. the products to make the lids are FDA approved.

Very nice but very spendy canning jars. I wish I knew someone who could get them for me wholesale. http://www.weckcanning.com/docs/about_weck.htm

Reusable Canning Lids Empty Grandma's jar lids

Post  ander217 on 8/29/2010, 4:05 pm

I haven't tried the reusable lids from this company. I have used the old glass lids with red rubber rings, however. They work, but I don't like using them for most things because they have a tab that sticks out from the rubber ring. One pulls outward on that tab to break the seal before opening the jar. I've found it's easy to get that tab caught or accidentally pulled when moving the jars around, but as long as one is careful they do fine. I kept them around to use for making sauerkraut in the jar. It wasn't recommended to use a metal lid with that particular recipe.

I have not used them either but I am excited. They are the same as "old school" as mentioned, it is like a hybid system, but using BPA free plastic. I hope it gets approved.

This is a great idea, but I can't get to the website -- anyone else having trouble connecting? Or know of another URL?

I do reuse some lids for high acid foods if I've only done water bath initially. I don't give the reused ones away--they are for my comsumption only. Out of the last 8 lids I reused, only one didn't seal, and that sometimes happens with new lids.
