Fall Garden
Has anyone started planting for their fall gardens?
What have you planted?
What do you plan to start in September?

Re: Fall Garden
Hi,
I'm currently changing out the soil in my boxes and have seedlings that will be ready to plant hopefully in a few weeks, am surprised anything sprouted in the heat! broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cucumber, arugala. Also I plan on direct seeding all the lettuce when I get the boxes done.
What are you planning and how is it there?

Re: Fall Garden
I still have corn, pumpkins, watermelon and string beans. I will probably be planting some lettuce, carrots and brocsoon. Then after the late summer stuff is done I'll do some spinach and Chinese veggies.
We'll see how it goes.
Weather has been nice the past couple of days. Days in the 90's and nights in the low 80's. It will warm back up though. We've been getting some good shows the past week and a half also. I was able to turn off my drip system most of the past 2 weeks.

Re: Fall Garden
Over at the ASU gardens (4,000 sq.ft. veggie garden, 1,500 sq.ft. herb garden) we're still putting out tons of Armenian cucumbers, Painted Serpent cucumbers, watermelon, muskmelon, peppers, squash/zucchini/pumpkins, and herbs out the butt.
Since we recruit new members at the end of August, and since we don't get funding until mid-September, we don't plant anything until then. BUT, we've already planned out varieties. Pretty much everything is weird or heirloom.
Beans (red yard-long, purple wax, yellow wax, Scarlet Runner)
Beets
Broccoli (purple)
Brussels sprouts (red)
Carrots (purple, yellow, white)
Cauliflower
Choy (every kind of Chinese brassica ending in choy)
Collards (giant)
Endives (bizarre fluffy ones)
Garlic (elephant)
Kale (massive varieties, red/purple/blue varieties, white varieties)
Leeks
Lettuce (no heading lettuce - tons of weird varieties though)
Mizuna
Mustard (giant red, unreasonably spicy, etc.)
Onions (lavender-colored, donut-shaped white, enormous yellow, sweet red)
Peas (purple exterior!)
Radish (Sakurajima daikon, black spanish, watermelon, long purple, etc.)
Spinach (giant)
Swiss Chard (bright lights, fordhook giant)
And of course, tons of herbs. But we have a separate garden for that now!

Re: Fall Garden
We actually have gardens at ASU Tempe AND ASU Polytechnic, but I don't run Poly
We actually don't plant in rows OR use raised beds. Since it would be too logistically difficult to build the wooden frames around every single 4'x8' plot, I've been having people just pile up compost directly on the ground. Some people dug their plots out, then filled the hole with compost. Last year we were totally disorganized, but this year everyone'll be planting according to the 1'x1' squares.
We're actually having our first club meeting this week (maybe next week), so once I've figured out the date and time for that why don't you stop by maybe 30 minutes beforehand? Let me know if you're interested.
