O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I just opened my front door to go outside & my box of garlic from We Grow Garlic was sitting there! My mail lady is so nice. If it doesn't fit in the box, she comes down our driveway & puts it on the porch for me instead of making me go to the PO to pick it up.
ANYWAY, I ordered from We Grow Garlic because you could order by the bulb, not a whole pound. The bulbs are large and they were well packed & labeled. They were shipped Priority Mail on 8/23, so from Wisconsin to TN in 3 days was pretty good. Sometimes it takes local mail that long.
I ordered 1 bulb of each:
Shandong
Thai Fire
Vostani
German Hardneck
Red Toch
Persian Star
Krasnodar white
Italian mountain red
Italian late
early Portugese
I just ordered different kinds to see what would work for me here.

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I got mine a couple of days ago! Here's my list:
If I had the space, I think growing and selling garlic by the bulb could raise some serious cash!

Ontario Giant
Shatili
Merrifield Rocambole

Romanian Red

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I am so jealous! I am still trying to figure out the whole hardneck / softneck thing. Figured I would try an assortment to see how it did.... and of course haven't gotten them ordered yet.
Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I am with you pattipan....
My order tracker shows out for delivery.
Don't remember what I ordered exactly, but also a variety for the same hardneck/softnext reason.

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
Speaking of keeping track of what we ordered... I went back today and copied the pictures and description of the six garlic that I ordered and put it in a Word document. I kind of want to keep track of what's what, especially which ones are hardneck and softneck.

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I hear you. I have a Google doc for all the seed I've gotten this year and how it's done, and just started another one on canning recipes I've used. (As opposed to those I want to try!)
Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I only ordered one type of garlic. Should I have ordered a few? I guess I'll find out how everyones did next year and base my order on that!

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
Megan, I hope you'll share your canning recipes We canned some wax beans, banana peppers, beets, red onions, and yellow onions last year using Alton Brown's recipe for refrigerator pickled beets, which was really easy.
Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I just used recipes out of the Ball Blue book -- Garlic Jelly (I still think it's jam, but Ball calls it jelly) and Zucchini Bread'n'Butter Pickles, so far.
I want to try Dilly Beans! Had trouble finding fresh dill weed or dill heads, in fact I finally did find some dill weed and left it in the shopping bag for a couple days and just this evening discovered a nasty, icky mess in there!
I will probably make at least one more batch of the Zuke b&b pickles, maybe with hot peppers next time, and I found a recipe online for cranberry mustard that I really want to try. Then whatever I can do with whatever tomatoes I get.

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
Ok so my garlic came a couple days ago. How many cloves to a square do y'all think?
On another thread we were discussing onions and it was suggested 5 to a square...garlic being significantly smaller than onions...what would you do?
I purchased:
KAZAKHSTAN
CZECHLAND RACE
CHAMISKURI
BROWN TEMPEST
BELARUS
EARLY PORTUGESE
KUTY
DUSHANBE

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
Wow, that's a lot of garlic! Can't wait for mine to arrive.
I never thought of garlic being smaller than onions. I was debating planting mine 4 or 9 to a square. I am very interested to hear what experienced garlic growers have to say on this.

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
Well....I guess I am speaking from the experience of only ever buying onions in the grocery store? Maybe home grown onions don't get big like the huge onions I get at the grocery.
Walla wallas that I buy in the store are as big as a russett baking potato. I was kinda going off the size of the garlic bulbs they sent me in my order, about 1/2 the size of the typical onion I buy at the store.
Yes interested to hear the advice!

Re: O happy day - Garlic has arrived
I just planted some garlic today.....9 to a square. This time I hope to get better results. I dug in lots of compost and added bonemeal to each square just like the book said. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the year that it really produces some decent sized bulbs.
The two kinds I planted are just plain old garlic. One is from the supermarket, so we'll see how that goes and the other was from a gardening friend who gave me some of his to plant last fall. I saved the biggest cloves from the ones I harvested and planted those. Nothing fancy.
