What to add to my SFG for fall planting Empty What to add to my SFG for fall planting

Post  CPN 8/25/2010, 6:16 pm

I was not happy with my Summer garden in general. Cleaned out some plants that were looking readl bad, and left others to see what happens. NOW, I am wanting to plant a few things for fall, ie: some dill, cilantro, radish, greend onions. Should I add something like compost into the soil before planting. I do not have a mix of five compost like I used when I made my beds, but I think I have some cow manure left. Any suggestions.

Sorry to hear that, CPN. Many gardeners have been having troubles this year, and it's not just SFGers either. It reassures me to know that people who've been gardening for years have been having problems -- makes newbies like me feel a bit better!

I think radishes would do very well in the fall. Not so sure about the others, but that's just my lack of experience showing. Worth a try though! I may just have to plant some more cilantro myself to see if I can get some more before winter, thanks for the idea. Smile

Definitely every time you clear out a square you should add more compost. That is SFG 101. I am picking up a half yard of compost locally next week so I have it on hand for the next phase.

Since your results for summer were lukewarm, now would be a good time to add some blood and bone meal or a general organic fertilizer along with any compost you have on hand or pick up at the store. If you feel your soil is inadequate, not bringing it up to speed would simply not give you the maximum results you deserve. The beauty of gardening is that each season is a blank slate!
