Leeks in Middle South
Does anyone have experience with growing leeks? I planted seeds about 2 weeks ago & none of them sprouted. I surface-sowed them like onions (which I never have a problem with), had them on a porch so they wouldn't cook in the sun. We've had temps in upper 90s to 100 & wondered if that was the problem. Hope someone can help because I really want to grow some.

Dixie, I think it's too warm yet-- I'm in a zone 8, and leeks are a huge crop in my area--- but only in the fall/winter/spring.

Everything I have read indicates that they prefer to not be broiling and are very long growing. I am going to try them in the spring but I shall seed them probably March. Good luck with your leeks.
Re: Leeks in Middle South
I planted mine from seed in March, they overwintered just fine and bloomed the following March, see pic. V E R Y slow grower....I am planting mine this week just to see what happens.
Re: Leeks in Middle South
My first seeds evidently cooked. I planted some inside last week & they sprouted in 4 days. I'm going to baby them & keep them inside under lights until it cools down some & plant later in the Fall.
