Gothic Compost
Mary and Ward with a free truck load of horse manure, spent hay and bedding. If you ask around you can find many sources of free items to fill your compost bins.
A proper hot compost pile will produce enough heat so that you can see steam rising on a cool day when the pile is stirred. Temps in the middle of the pile can reach as high as 160 degrees or more. On page 92 in the "ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening" book Mel talks about the right mix of brown to green materials for a hot pile.
God Bless, Ward.

Re: Gothic Compost
I miss my manure pile. Only problem was, when I had horses, I didn't have time to garden!
I found out how much I love to garden when I no longer had horses, and couldn't figure out what on earth to do with myself.
Easy answer - summer, garden. Winter, read gardening books and catalogs!!
