I found a lovely watermelon under the leaves.

Yippee! I was so surprised. The variety is Sugar Baby and won't be very large when grown. There may be more under the leaves, the leaves are so thick. I put a plastic board under it so its easier to find and also so it doesn't rot from wet mulch. These are in my community garden rows.

The cantaloupes, Sweet Granites, are much smaller but I have a couple on my 3 vines.

I also have 3 little watermelon growing in my home garden. I'm soooo happy.

Neato! You guys in zone 5 are having a heck of a good summer this year!
Re: I found a lovely watermelon under the leaves.
boffer....Compared to last year, my first SFG year, when we were inundated with lots of rain in June and rain just about daily in July, this is a bonanza year for us in Maine. The weather has been cooperating and so have the early spring temps so we could start earlier this year. It makes SFG well worthwhile.
Eating our own crops this year has been marvelous.

What a wonderful surprise! It's amazing how they hide.

Re: I found a lovely watermelon under the leaves.
I remember NE in summer last year. I was there for most of June and I ran around in socks, a black raincaot and a scarf. It was very much like my visits in March and December.
