Garden is a little frustrating this time of year!

You can sure tell it's kind of the frustrating time of year for southern gardens! Hardly any posts compared to usual. Right now I have a few cukes, a few melons, a few squash, and a few eggplant. Herbs are good, but not really a lot else right now.

I am getting ready to get my tomatoes starts in the ground and start my brassicas by seed inside (yes, I'm a little behind), but I'm getting very impatient for getting other salady type stuff growing again. The chard is too bitter in this heat, I don't really like Malabar spinach raw by itself, salad burnette is good in a mix, but another one that I don't like by itself and I haven't got my New Zealand spinach seeds yet (supposed to be in the mail).

Anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah, it's the pits, isn't it? Only suggestion I have is to weather it out (literally). And you are not too late on seeding brassicas. Aggie guide says mid-July-1st August (I'm in the same region as you, just farther west.) My problem is I don't want to pull anything up to put fall veggies in, so I'm probably going to start everything in flats in the house if I can get my b*tt in gear to do so.

I did just seed some summer squash since most of mine is so stressed its not producing any longer. Tomatoes are really wimpy looking, but they'll perk back up come cooler weather, so I've decided not to replant this year.

The New Zealand spinach seeds are here, so I'll get that planted and see how that does over the next few weeks, see what it tastes like. I did get lots of stuff started inside for the fall garden yesterday, only about a week behind my plan, so that's doing pretty good for me!

I also got my fall tomatoes planted yesterday along with playing in the flower beds most of the morning, so all in all, a pretty productive day. I just still wish I had a little more going onto my plate! I'll have to keep searching and trying things to work out other things I can plant for salad stuff in the heat.

Anyone have more suggestions for things to grow in our crazy Texas heat? Don't tell me okra, I hate the stuff!

It's been in the mid to high 90's or triple digits for the last week or so and it's expected to continue for at least the next week. I just wish it would go down during the night a little more. We could grow so much more if our plants would get a break during the night - all I'm asking is mid or low 70's instead of staying around 80, is that too much to ask?
