My Cherokee Purple tomatoes started ripening last week. I have 4 plants in different locations and the soils vary.
The sizes vary from medium to large. The tops are green and the bottom looks like a pink overlayed w/ green ( The photos make them look much darker). There is quite a bit of cracking around the top and they split around the widest part after a heavy rain. I am picking them a few days before ripening to try to prevent some splitting.
Describing taste is difficult for me, because I'm a newbie to heirloom varieties. I would say it's a good flavor with a bit of sweet & tart.
Mine are not full of the "old garden tomato" flavor I was expecting.
I still have a few seeds left, next year, I'll still grow Cherokees for the variety and maybe they will do better.
I think I'll try to grow Brandywines next year to get that flavor.

I've never tried that variety, it is very unusual looking. Aren't fresh tomatoes wonderful?

Beautiful harvest!! Very nice. You are making me all eager for mine to start to ripen.

My Cherokee Purple only has two green tomatoes on the vine so far. Can't wait! After a very slow start, it is starting to grow well (and has grown better than the other two varieties I have, so far.)

Some of you have read how mean my husband is to me. At this point, the tomato harvest is just starting, and is very small, so I haven't yet had any of our new tomatoes. Well, I exaggerate. I had one sweet pea currant. Y'all know how little that is?

Love your pictures. Now I know what to look for from my two plants.
I'm in the far north, in Maine, so I just have a few blossoms so far and not a lot of growth and I also planted them later than my other tomatoes.
Love how yours are looking.

And yes, it's the same mean husband. I guess I need to stop picking on him. At least for the rest of the night. It's 11:12 pm here!

Today, I picked 12 more Cherokee Purple tomatoes. I'ts such a joy.
I definitly will grow them in self-watering containers next year. There was way more splitting/cracking in the ones grown in the ground.

I got some are crazy distorted, oblong, and round tomatoes.
They can appear different, even on the same plant.
I spritz them w/ a Neptune's Fish Emulsion & Seaweed every week, and it seems to help them along.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures I just ordered a bunch of clearance seeds for fall and next year planting. One of them is the Cherokee Purple. I can't wait for next spring now!
My Mortgage Lifters my Dad gave me are finally starting to produce. We had an incredible hot early June followed by more reasonable temps. But now we are back to the 75*F nights and 95* days with a heat index of 105*. I am just hoping for anything at this time.
My pole beans are going crazy but the flowers are being eaten so only a handful of beans so far.

What is eating your pole bean flowers? Mine have lots and lots of flowers, and I am starting to see many tiny bean-lets.

Yikes. Glad I have not seen those guys on my plants! I have enough trouble without them.

I have seen bean blossoms fallen off, but I think it is mainly the blossom drying up and the baby bean starting... and maybe some bumblebee action, too. They seem determined to get into those little curled up bean flowers!

I'm not sure what to do with this many tomatoes.

I am so jealous. My tomatoes are so late due to the wet and cold spring we had. We did not have any real sun until around June 10th this year so everything is delayed.

I confess, I turned the ugly sides away for the pic.

I will probably try to can next year, because I don't want to buy the supplies this year.
I turned those tomatoes and many more into cream of tomato soup.
The next batch will be turned into salsa.
I'm enjoying trying new recipes w/ batches of tomatoes. I would never do that w/ store bought maters.
