Strange Critter Eating Beans

Hi
My SFG is growing but there are some little trespassers on the property.
Can anyone tell me what these are and how to get rid of them?
Also the ants seem to have made a home there. What should I do about
them?

That destructive little beastie is a Japanese beetle. Hand pick & put them in a can of soapy water or squish them. Click here for more info.

I have never been bitten by one, but they are squirmy when you pick them up (they may pinch) garden gloves will protect you.

I've seen lure traps for Japanese beetles for sale in the garden supply section of the hardware store. I don't know how well they work though. These little buggers are horribly destructive on some plants. They used to eat my father's grape vines pretty much bare when I was a kid.

I have my doubts about those traps. I don't want to lure more of those nasty beasts to my yard... I'm thinking about using the milky spore .

The traps work pretty well, just put a little ways from the garden so it doesnot attact more. Once I put my traps up, my infreestation drastically redeuced. Only have 2-3 per day now and those I habd pick.

I like the traps since I can get the ones that were not in the garden and then they cannot procrate and make a new generation.

My beans have recovered nicely since I trapped these little devils.

Japanese beetles leave their grubs in your lawn soil. By adding milky spore disease and beneficial nematodes, you can avoid the same problem year after year.

Funny story, my dad's lawn is heaven for Japanese beetles. My sister and fam live there too, but lawn maintenance is not the priority. They built a summer house in the lawn on the edge of the wood and did put down a floor of pavers, but not cemented. It was fully screened. That summer they could not figure out why there were alway Japanese beetles in the place - millions od them. How were they getting in? Until they firgured out that they had been in the soil and hatched and were stuck in the summer house.
