Help! My peas were doing GREAT now they are all brown!

What could have happened to them? Is it this hot weather we been having? I have been watering like crazy this whole time!Thank you for any help!

Peas are generally a cool-weather crop. I know you're getting slammed with heat now, so they may not recover. How long ago did you plant them? Were they mature enough to have flowered and produced pods? If so, I'd say they're probably done, and maybe you can consider a fall crop of peas. I'm pulling my peas out now, too.

I did get some pea pods and such but maybe enough for 1 person! I wanted at least enough for the 3 of us!. Ugg! When should I plant them if I want a fall crop? I am in zone 6B... I think.

I'm thinking of trying another planting of peas now in the next squares over from where I'm pulling the vines out. The ones I have are "Little Marvel" but I don't think they are heat tolerant. Check this for some other suggestions: University of Illinois Extension - Peas

If this works, I'll re-seed another square in a couple of weeks.

For a fall crop, I'd plant about 8 weeks before frost.

How many did you plant? I put in three squares, with 9 plants per square, and that was enough for me, with some to bring to my daughter and grandkids.

I planted 4 to a square with 4 squares. I got about half a cup chucked. :(I guess I will plant around mid August to be safe. Normally it is frozen everywhere I am (amazingly this even happened when I lived in Florida... but that was because I was visiting OR) on my birthday (Oct. 22) so mid Aug would be about right.

The heat has put an end to my spring peas as well. I may be able to salvage the rest of the English peas, but the sugar snaps are pretty much done. I planted 16 per square with about 12 germinating per square. I had a satisfactory harvest: 4 squares sugar snaps = 5+ lbs.

Or you could plant like me....I had a bed like in my avatar (both sides of the 3 1/2 x 7 ft bed) and planted HUNDREDS of seeds in the entire thing like a crazed woman. I am always upset each year that we never have enough peas. Not this year Very Happy

I picked tonight for the first time---at least 6 cups of pea pods, LOL!

Oooo I like that idea because then I could use the rest of my seeds! And we can always use peas! Yum!

Yup, my peas are done too and with the rabbits help, I barely got any from some lovely, TALL vines. Ah, well...now, what to plant there next? LOLOL

I have gotten a scant handful of peas from my Lincoln peas within the past couple of days... and that is the first/only yield. Do you get better yields from bush or "pole" (vining) Garden/English peas?? Mine still have a couple blooms on them but I think I may just tear them out.

My English peas are just getting ready for harvest, and they look lovely. I will say the bottom leaves are kind of brownish, but I think that has more to do with moisture than anything (the leaves turn brown where water sits on them, I'm pretty sure).

Next year, I'm going to do only sugar snap peas. I did a bush style English pea this year to see what they were like, and I only could grow 4 plants in a square. So needless to say, I don't think I'll be getting too many peas out of my three squares! Plus the rabbit came through and chomped some of the plants down a while ago. They're growing back, but I don't think they'll do as well as they would have if they were still full grown.
