Pumpkin and Garden
This is my pumpkin in a pot...all these pictures are over a week old and everything is different already.

This is my pathetic bed....not the most pathetic, but pathetic none the less. Carrots are doing what?? Although there's more greeniery now. The chard? Nothing...just sits there, but I haven't the heart to rip it all out like I did the spinach. I did eat about 4 leaves of it on a sandwich. I planted Okra and Lima beans in the ripped out spinach squares. The Lima beans seemed to sprout over night, but something ate them at ground level and underneath as they were sprouting. It's nuts. Now that the plants are more established, the munching seems to have slowed.

I'm proud of this bed, since it's my most lush. The peppers and eggplant are doing GREAT. I staked the eggplant and have four eggplants on the plants, growing like gangbusters.

Re: Pumpkin and Garden
How many eggplants did you plant? I only planted one and it has produced 7 eggplants so far. So you need to ask yourself: how many eggplants can you eat?

Uh, oh. I planted 4, however, 3 of them are the thin, small Asian variety and one is a standard eggplant. I have a bunch of pepper plants as well, 4 tomatoes, and spring onions in the front of that one bed. I figure I'll make a lot of babaganoush. LOL. I bought tahini in preparation.

YUMMY! I planted 4 aubergine plants, I had originally planned for only 2. If they produce well, I'm going to try a variety of preserving methods in addition to the delicious Baba ganoushsilverbug wrote: I figure I'll make a lot of babaganoush. LOL. I bought tahini in preparation.

Thanks. I'm scared I'm not going to get any pumpkins though...if not, it's been lovely to look at and every day more flowers.

I am so jealous of your eggplant. So far I have planted two and both are not exactly stellar. And it is my fave! LOL.
Re: Pumpkin and Garden
You should see them NOW...they've far outpaced the tomatoes, which has never, ever happened to me. If you lived closer, I'd share with you, which was my original intent if ever I ended up with too much of anything.

Re: Pumpkin and Garden
WOW that pumpkin is awesome growing like that! I planted one eggplant last year and didn't have any luck at all with it, and I planted one this year and it just now is starting to grow, it looks nothing like yours!

Pumpkin in a bucket
Pumpkin in a bucket -- now why didn't I think of that? I LOVE pumpkin but didn't grow any because it takes up so much space and I was out of trellis room.

Just curious, is your pumpkin a regular large size pumpkin or a miniature? I planted miniature pumpkins and wonder what I should do with the vines at they continue to get longer. I may just let them sprawl out or train them upward.
Love what you've done with your pumpkin! Keep us posted with pictures as it gets larger!

Re: Pumpkin and Garden
You can put miniature pumpkins on a teepee. I'm thinking of doing that for my son to play in since my teepee plantings aren't doing so hot and I'm thinking of starting it over.

Re: Pumpkin and Garden
jen, I'm embarrassed to admit that there are 4 plants in that pot
. I started with miniture pie pumpkins and my patience was poor...I was convinced that my seeds weren't going to germinate, that it'd been too long. I bought two plants of some basic variety of "jack-o-lantern" pumpkin that said that the pumpkins would reach 7-10 pounds. When I went to turn the soil in the pot, I turned up two sprouted seeds from the pie pumpkins. I planted the two standards on one side of the trellis and the pie pumpkins on the other. The pie ones are tiny, not growing much and only one vine of the bigger guys is winning in the growth race. I kinda was just experimenting and looking for vertical visual interest. It's been GREAT to watch.
I have more garden pics but internet explorer gave me some funky warning message so I figured I'd get out while the getting was good.
The last picture is of my herb garden along my garage, and the impatiens are in a window box attached to my daughter's play set. I never go up there but when I did to get the pumpkin shot, I saw how big and lovely they were getting.

Re: Pumpkin and Garden
Your garden looks great. I really like how you utilized the narrow space for your herbs. I enjoyed your pictures.
Re: Pumpkin and Garden
Thanks everyone. It feels really great to hear positive feedback from fellow gardeners. My husband doesn't much comment on it one way or the other, and when you work really hard at something, it's just nice to hear that other people think it's pretty too. Hehehehe.
Yeah, my herb garden is quite established at this point. My sage is HUGE, in it's 4th summer, same with the oregano that I just had to stake and tie upward, summer savory, thyme, lemon thyme, rosemary, lavender, basil, flat leaf parsley, curly parsley....yum.
