My hermaphrodite cucumber
So, I have been busy trying to pollinate cucumbers with a paint brush. Since I purchased the plants this year, I have six varieties. My lemon cucumber flowers looked strange to me but I tried to pollinate them anyway.
Yesterday I was reading the Territorial Seed catalog and find out that lemon cucumbers are hermaphrodites -- they contain both male and female parts on every flower! Who knew! I can just image the plant laughing at me.
Does this mean that I don't have to try to pollinate this plant by hand? If it has both male and female parts in the same plant, won't it pollinate itself every time?

Re: My hermaphrodite cucumber
Yes when they are hermaphrodite they will do the work of both gender flowers. I read that this year as well. While I didnt get to grow them I sent seedlings to the neighbor I started, and they are doing fine. I will grow them again, I liked their flavor and looks.

I got a good laugh out of it.

Re: My hermaphrodite cucumber
Oh great, a self-sufficient cucumber, that's what I need.
I hope that means I can cover this one w/ netting and keep the buggers off of it.
A co-worker told me about these last week, and said she will share some of her upcoming harvest with me.
