gotta be kidding me: cabbage maggot

i pulled one of my largest turnips today, super excited, pulled it and it look liked a highway was driven through it. So, I kept pulling and EVERY ONE istunneled. I broke one root off and there it was, a larvae, stupid white maggot. So after research I figured out what it was.

I pulled some beets and they seem fine.

so... what do I do to prevent this!!! I used two squares that could have been dedicated to something else. I was so concentrated on cabbage moth and cabbage maggot.
