Audrey III
Like Megan, my pumpkin has laughed at my 6 foot trellis. I was trying to figure out how to deal with it when it solved its own problem - I hope. Assuming I don't just kill it, I have high hopes.
It reached the top and made a nice loop and I am hoping gravity does the rest:
Yesterday I went to pick a male blossom and shake it around the females
and when I went to grab it I saw there was a bee inside and decided it
could do a better job than me.

Yay Chopper!!!
Wish mine was that easy to convince. It is fighting hard against my encouragement to grow "down", and I've had to keep tying, and re-tying, tightly.
And did you notice this? That little stem pointing straight at the chimney is yet another branch, reaching for the sky! I'm going to have to start pruning this thing. Whoever heard of an indeterminate squash?

This is genius."...pick a male blossom and shake it around the females..."
Re: Audrey III
I am leaving for week or 10 days as are my daughter and kids leaving my Russian son-in-law who grew up in an apartment in Moscow and doesn't know from vegetables in charge of the garden. So who knows what the Little Shop of Horrors will present when I return.
Luckily I have automated watering so theoretically, there should be no problems.

Re: Audrey III
Since we are all adults here, (Josh, cover your eyes)... The male flowers just have a stem, the female flowers have a fruit - the stem looks round - a mini pumpkin or whatever.
See illustrations below - the flowers have closed for the night, but you get the idea:
Female flower:
Male flower:
Or just look at which is prettier...

Re: Audrey III
I'm still waiting on a female flower. I know the males show up a couple weeks early (the girls are still primping in the bathroom), but it's been at least a month and still no girls!!! Hurry up girls!!
Re: Audrey III
I've got the opposite problem... not enough male flowers. And I've discovered that my monster squash blossoms are often closed by the time I get home!! One of the squash fruits is looking very sad and I'm thinking it didn't get pollinated. Sigh.
I don't have a paintbrush (well, somewhere maybe?) but I've been using a chive stem.
And what is HE doing in my post-a-reply box??

Ties
Megan, I'm just curious - why do you use an entire knee-hi to tie your pumpkins? I cut mine into strips for tying my tomatoes. Do you need extra bulk for heavy fruits like pumpkins?

Sheer laziness -- I couldn't find my sharp scissors and they wouldn't cut with the dull ones. But I also figured I might need to use whole ones for watermelons. I might start cutting them up if I run low on them.
And speaking of pumpkins, I am trying to figure out where to plant some! I may just let them sprawl on the ground in the little patch of grass we have left, as I don't think my trellises will free up in time?

Re: Audrey III
I think Tim has been more active while he is on vacation than when he was concentrating on his garden.
Here's my girl!
You can't see it in the first photo, really, but there is one branch on the ground, and another almost on the ground.
The other side of the trellis. All those squash leaves are from this same plant. There's at least one branch in here someplace.
Two beautiful fruit hanging near mid-frame, both about as long as my forearm. There is another runner that is almost on the ground here...the other plants are obscuring the view.
