I harvested the remainder of my garlic this morning before I water the garden.

Hope the pics in the link are helpful.

Fresh garlic smells SO WONDERFUL!

That is neat! We quite like garlic around here also and may have to check doing something like that this fall.

Thanks for sharing!

you won't regret it - it's really easy to do and fun to harvest - you don't know what's under the ground til you pull it up and it's surprise after surprise!

Since garlic is on of those all purpose pest deterrents, I was thinking of planting one clove in the corner of each square. I have a few squares going right now and it is very hard for me to be patient! Still needs some more time though. Garlic Harvest Time!! Icon_sad

I can't wait.

Wow, that looks like a wonderful harvest!

Ok....so....you plant them in fall and let them sit all winter under snow and cold?!?!?
I don't know why this concept baffles me so much. Guess living in MN where winters can be so darn cold throws me off. I can hardly believe garlic would survive here.

I really want to try it this year though. You've inspired me.

yup buried under snow and cold. and we had record snow this year in ohio. several feet of snow was over the garlic and stayed that way for months. i ultimately SHOVELED the snow off other beds that were 'empty' so that i could plant peas this past spring, lol. i let the snow melt naturally off the garlic beds though and they were just fine.

i have some huge bulbs! been averaging 10 cloves each bulb - the smallest bulbs have 8 cloves, the largest bulb that i used so far was 18 cloves. . .

so i feel a good return on my original investment of $5.25 for the original garlic purchase. Smile

bettyann
who needs to go checkon the garlic drying in basement to see if the soil will flake off yet. . .

thanks, BettyAnn

Now, I remember....last winter was a record-setter all over the US! Oh, did we get snow. But I do believe that there were states east of us that received more snow than we did....wow.

I will try garlic this year.....and let ya know.

i suggest doing what i did. go to the local 'mom and pop' style garden center and ask them what will do best in a raised bed. and then buy what they point out. *grin*

they told me the german hardneck would do best (and the kind i bought was locally grown and harvested, so it was already acclimated to our weather patterns). or something like that. *grin*

they also told me a soft garlic don't remember the variety (also local) would be ok but it would need a bit more care - but i am a no frills kind of gal, so i liked simplicity - stick in soil and dig out again. . . nothing in between. *smile*

it's amazingly yummy - kind of like how home grown carrots taste WAY better than storebought. . .

I am so impatient for my garlic! I planted in March not knowing any better so who knows when it will be done. Not yet is all I know.

When I saw "Harvest Time" - and this is WAY off topic - it reminded me of the tv show Tom Hanks used to be in. There was a scene where he and his buddy were remembering back to high school and it was the end of year prom. His friend asked if he was going and Hanks, (this would have been early 70s), looking very hippie like said no, he was going to his cousin's in Canada - it was "Harevest Time" wink, wink (I am ssuming he was talking about pot). My only thought was, "In June? In Canada? I don't think so, my friend!" LOL. A gardener to the core.
