Milaneyjane, speak to us, please! How bad was it?

Hail is one of my biggest fears with the garden. I've seen it go from beautiful and lush plants one minute, to nothing more than broken stems and leaf-strewn soil the next minute. It's almost unbelievable.

I wasn't able to get out to the garden because we got torential rains and my garden was flooded! Shocked I have never seen anything like that here. There is hail damage is worse to the larger leaf items like my basil and peppers and zinnias, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Lots of flowers on the plants are gone. Some of the plants were snapped off on the top. The worst hit were my onions from the rain. They are all sitting in the beds half uncovered. I am going to need to add several inches of mix into the boxes. My Mels Mix sits at least 4 inches below the top of the beds and if it was anything like I saw in my flower gardens, the soil must have washed out over the top with the flooding rain.

When the storm hit I was literally mulching my near 100 foot flower bed with cocoa bean mulch. The bed has a retaining wall border and we watched as the beds flooded and all the new mulch washed down over the sides several feet into the yard. What an expensive waste. Now to get it all out of the lawn. We have had storms before, but none with that much rain damage. Thankfully, my plants survived for the most part Very Happy

I am so sorry to hear about that.... I normally adore thunderstorms but now that I have a SFG, the idea of hail scares the daylights out of me. Glad it wasn't worse, though... thank goodness!!!

My condolences! I had an awful time with Hail last year. This year, I've been much better about covering for it. I even used a giant rubbermaid bin to protect my giant pumpkin plant. Murphy's law is at work though, because we haven't had bigger than marble sized hail this year. If I hadn't covered and hadn't grown back-up seedlings, I'm sure we would have had golf-ball sized hail routinely again!
