I've caught doves in the act of eating seedlings so they could be the culprits. Bulbuls are said to eat anything, including orchids and hot chiles. They are the brown birds with red rumps below their tails.

About slugs, I've been assured that Sluggo, available at City Mill and Walleys (on Beretania), is organic and effective. It costs but lasts quite a while.

I just discovered one of my Red Mini Bell pepper transplants disappeared. It was there yesterday and today its gone, cut off at the soil level. I guess it was a slug. I usually put a couple of toothpicks, one on either side of the stem, pushed into the soil at the stem, but forgot on the last few I planted the other day.
That will teach me.

Doesn't sound like slugs. Cutworms will cut at soil lever but I don't think they clean up after themselves and throw out the plant. I am baffled.

I stand corrected Chopper. I meant cutworms.
Yes, that baffled me, too, the fact that the plant was completely gone from the ground up.
Maybe one of the dogs got hungry?????

Oh yeah! Those brown birds with the red butt, love red veggies! I would use a net of some kind.
