I saw a tiny metallic looking bee/wasp on my squash leaves this morning. The dew was still on and it looked like the bee was just taking a drink. I thought maybe it was some sort of sweat bee???

I have seen sweat bees before, even in this same garden, but these tiny golden ones are not anything I have seen before. Doesn't mean they're not another variety, though.

Maybe it's a longlegged fly? http://bugguide.net/node/view/60766

Of course I'm not even sure it's the same insect we saw, Megan, I'm just guessing again! If I see it again, I'll see if I can get a picture. I just got a new camera and it will be a good test of it's capabilities!

I haven't gotten a good picture of the little golden bug either, but I'll keep on trying! Smile

I got some pictures this morning of the gold-colored fly in my SFG. Depending on how the sun hit them sometimes they look green and sometimes they look gold. And this one IS a fly, more specifically, a Longlegged Fly. They are very tiny, so I think my new camera did very well! (Olympus PEN E-PL1).

This one was on a bean leaf:

Hmm... I will continue to try to get a shot of mine. I don't think mine are the same, but.... Thanks pattipan!

The bug cursors were posted by kingdaddy.

This is the real boffer beetle-it's screened in, so it doesn't get annoying!

I have thoroughly researched this online, and all sources agree that Boffer Bugs are excellent to have in one's garden. There are anecdotal reports, however, that one should keep them far away from beer coolers.

I've never found one in this area. I think they are most often seen nesting in the Pacific Northwest.

There's an old wive's tale that if you pat one on the head it will bring you good luck.
