here is the ad for compost sold at the county landfill...

County Compost
$ 4.00/1 cubic foot bag
Bulk Rate: $33.00 per cubic yard, delivered within 15 miles, 5 yard minimum

Compost produced from local yard wastes (mostly leaves)
Till or shovel 1 - 3" of County Compost into your garden or flower beds. Or spread 1/2" of County Compost on the soil surface and let the worms work it in. Compost should be mixed with topsoil, do not grow plants in pure compost

It was mentioned on another post that I may have to worry about the chemicals from peoples lawns...

Thoughts?

Topsoil make from screened sand loam and composted paper sludge from the Rhinlander Paper Company. Great for lawns, no lime or nitrogen needed!

I just got a bunch of compost from my local landfill. It's ironic really. I paid them to take my green waste (I just have way too much to compost on my own,) and then I turned around and paid them to take home the compost they make from the green waste.

On the plus side: it's cheap compost, and they have to test it for pathogens.

On the down side: Mel recommends compost from a mix of sources, so it's probably best to mix this compost with other sources.

Hi,
For years I have used our local landfill compost and had great results. I did not use anything else in my beds and did not have any problems. This past year I started using a little fish emulsion. Again I have been very happy with the results. I figure that lots of folks donate to the compost pile, so it is from many sources. Just be warned 5 cubic yards of compost is a lot of compost. You might need somewhere to store it. I have a fairly large garden and it uses 1-1.5 cubic yards a year. Our compost is cheaper, but you have to pick it up. I need a load this week, if it ever stops raining. Happy shoveling.
