Hi Sanderson!  Glad to know the Molten Fire is doing well for you!  I've learned this past year it also does very well in here in December and makes a festive flair to holiday salads that have become my signature salad.  It includes cranberry hibiscus, and organic dried cranberries.

On another note. I've been having trouble with using my phone on this forum.  I've been trying different browsers but they all keep logging me out. I'll get this figured out.  Very Happy

My Amaranth Dreadlocks indoor sown seedlings are really tiny and scrawny looking. I'm afraid they will disappear if I plant them out in the garden. Guess I have to give them a chance but I'll wait until the beginning of June.

I LOVE these plants. The slightest breeze sends the leaves "quaking" like aspen. My plants aren't very big, but one of them is blooming already. Beautiful!
Amaranth - Page 4 Amaran11
I read that the leaves are edible and good in salads but I'm not sure I can do that. The plants are so pretty I don't think I can eat them. Maybe when they get bigger and I have enough leaves they'll never miss a few. Rolling Eyes

has anyone in the south try to grow this plant? If so, what do you do to prevent it from becoming an aggressive weed?

Dstack in FL grows it. Maybe he will comment. I think staking would help, and if you don't want volunteers, remove when it starts to drop seeds. ??

This year I planted Amaranth.  The biggest one is about 8 inches now.  When can I harvest for leaves?

I would wait a little more until they have leaves to spare. Some of them look like they still need the ones they have.

I got amaranth seeds from Marie. They sprouted beautifully and grew into big, healthy plants. All of them are red but one. This one is a gorgeous combination of green leaves and red blossoms. Christmas in August! CoolAmaranth - Page 4 Amaran10

That's wonderful to hear!

Amazing how hearing that seeds I shared help make someone else happy... And you're right, Suz, in that I look at them like kids/grandkids. This has made a smile come to my face. And I'm not exactly the poster-child for morning happiness, lol....

LOL! That's Hubby, too. I start bubbling at about 6am. He doesn't want to hear a sound before 9. Makes for some very interesting mornings. affraid

Oh, yeah... My mom is a morning person, so it's entertaining (for her, maybe) when I spend the night with her. Thankfully hubby understands & leaves me pretty well alone, lol.

If I wasn't a morning person I couldn't garden in our climate. Right now it's about 70 degrees. Time to move some more rocks for the new Zombie Garden. By 10am, it will be high 90s, pushing triple-digits. I will be exiled to the couch by then for the rest of the day. That's the drill for the whole summer, with most days "over" by 9. Sad

I started Dreadlocks Amaranth from seeds obtained from Baker Creek.  The plants at the front of the house have grown quite tall but no flowers.  The shorter plants at the back of the house have small flowers.

It is a pretty plant, TD.  Are you growing it to eat the leaves, grain, all of the above, or just as an ornamental?

I started out growing for an ornamental. But maybe I should try the leaves and maybe the grain if they develop that far. It was really just an experiment to see if they would grow up here in the great white north.

Here is what my Dreadlocks Amaranth looks like now.  The first two photos are at the front of the house and the third in the flower garden at the back of the house. Will I grow it again? Probably not.Amaranth - Page 4 Img_4637

Beautiful dreadlocks. My close cousin Celosia self seeding.  They will soon produce hot pink cocks' combs.  Even the vinca is surviving this horrible summer. Amaranth - Page 4 Flower10
