working on building the SFG the other day, I put my 8 yr old to work, she was having a blast. I told her "you know how they have take your daughter to work day? this is put your daughter to work day" she helped me cut down a tree that was shading the garden area, haul all of the branches to the fire pit and then drill and stain the wood for the boxes

I finally finished filling the boxes and making the grid today but I didnt have my camera on me, i'll get some pics soon. I missed having my helper around though, wont see her till next weekend.

it's put your daughter to work day Empty Daughters are great helpers

Howdy:

Our daughter is a great help to me when she comes home from college. We had a great time when she was younger helping in the orchard. She even has her own apple tree. You might want to build your daughter her own box. A 3'X3' is great for a younger person.

God Bless, Ward.

Does your daughter travel? How much does she charge? I could sure use the help!

She looks pretty handy with that drill. I'm going to show my teenage gson these pictures. Maybe he'll hop to it and not let an 8 year old girl show him up.

Great pictures and story. Thanks for posting.

She does look handy with that drill. I've been practicing and almost got the drilling a hole down, I still can't use it to put the screw in though... I never get it straight and forget about putting it in reverse to get a screw out... practice, practice.

Way to go., l sure like to see tools in the hands of kids (age appropriate and with supervision, of course). I'm running into more and more adults who don't know which end of a hammer to use. It worries me.

bpb....thanks for sharing - she looks like she's having a good time, and it's important for kids to feel like they're actually helping an adult.

That's my main reason for starting SFG this yr. I grew up on a small farm and had lots of chores, but my kids have only known 'big city life'. My 9 and 7 yr olds are excited about helping with the garden. I never thought about having them actually build it! I think we'll do just that.

Post more pix as you come along - don't forget to include your helper!
