Planting Seeds

Built my SFG's about a month ago and filled with Mel's mix. Due to work and some other distractions I am finally planting this week. I have never planted seeds before.
How deep do you plant them?
Do you cover the planted seed back up with some Mel's mix from your garden?

My very unscientific method:

Read the seed packet first to see if has anything to tell you. If it doesn't give any advice, I plant about 1/3-1/4" deep, or half a fingernail, and I am not terribly precise about that. Little seeds tend to go more shallow than the bigger ones, though. For example, for carrots I just put them on top of the soil and tap them a couple times to get them a little covered so they wouldn't blow away before I watered them. The squash seeds I gave a fingernail's depth.

And yes, you cover them up. I just pat the soil gently with my fingers. Then give it a nice watering. A garden can is ideal because the water is warm and sprinkles gently so as not to disturb the soil much. If you don't have one, you could probably set up a fine spray with a garden hose and your thumb, if you hit it from a distance so the spray's not so intense. (The main idea there is just to avoid having the water pressure moving the seed too far from where you planted it. I am still playing the "what is that coming up over there?" game, though.)

A very GENERAL rule of thumb is 3 times as deep as the widest part of the seed. For me, a bean seed goes down as deep as my 2nd knuckle. A carrot is long but narrow. I put just a dusting of light soil over it. Tomatoes are put down to about the top of my fingernail. Again it isn't a hard and fast rule but it works for me.
