Hello,

This is my 1st time doing a garden period. So if I talk ya'll head off with question I'm sorry inadvance. People of Tennessee is often accused of talking to much and to fast. So please be patience with me. I'm so excited about doing this SFG, me and my daughter is doing it together, after my hubby builds the box. I think I'm going to do the SFG that sits on saw horses. Has any one done this yet? If so how did it do compared to sitting on the ground.

Thanks
Shonda

I like a fast talker!

How old is your daughter?

Deborah ....who has always gotten dirty at ground level.

Hi mwood4d,

Welcome to the forum. I'm a big fan of SFG boxes that are not on the ground. We call them tabletops, or TT SFG. This is a picture of my neighbor's garden.

My daughter is 12, and very excited about do this. Thanks for the pic on the TT Garden, I think that is what I'm going to do. My 1st question is, Is it better to start the seeds in houseor just plant them directly in the garden. Like I said this is all new to me, so any help would be great.

Thanks

1st Timer in TN Empty Keep it Simple

Post  SirTravers 3/10/2010, 3:28 pm

If you're a novice I say keep it as simple as possible. I grew up in Tennessee around Memphis so I know the weather there. You should be safe to put your seeds in the ground right around Easter. That's what we always did and it worked great. Any of the veggies you see that are sold as plants at the store are best purchased that way in the beginning. Once you get some experience you'll get the bug to start gardening earlier and earlier. That's where all the greenhouse, coldframe, starter bed and grow light stuff comes in. Welcome to the group and a most addictive way of life hehe.
