OK...I'm cured.
Cranked my tiller up for the last time..well one of the last times this season anyway..Made up two rows near 50 feet long. Just wanted to show the real difference between and versatile a SFG is as opposed to a row garden.
In my SFG I have 16 squares, 14 of which are planted with different veggies...My row garden...so far 7 tomato plants about 2 feet apart, a pepper and a cantaloupe at the far end....will plant some other things but believe you get the idea..
Whole time I was planting the row I was thinking how much easier it was to plant things in my SFG...and not having to fight with a tiller either....
Yep...this is my last year with a row garden. There will be 3 more 4X4 foot SFG's where those rows are now well before early spring planting time...

Glad to see that you're cured! Can't remember when I last used the tiller, though it still sits in the garage. Fortunately, mine is an old Troy-Bilt (before MTD bought them) with the PTO, and it has a chipper/shredder on it that gets used a couple times a year.

I got a Troy Built tiller in mid 70's and just slap wore it out. Lasted a good 30 plus years and was so easy to use as apposed to a front tine tiller. Thought about getting another but would be pointless now that i'm going to SFG's.
Just about ready to harvest my first veggy from my SFG.. Cauliflower is near ready but read I need to blanch it first.. Never would have happened in my row garden.

That is an impressive show off of SFG. I am very surprised you have cauliflower already!
I am hoping to get my little 9" tiller working. (We get it working well, my better half cleans out the carb or whatever, and despite using ethanol free gas, it won't start the next time. Don't ask me. He's worked on machines all his life.) I don't want to till up my worms, but I want to till off the grass from areas I'm trying to flatten and landscape for non-gardening purposes, like under the water totes. A tiller really helps that work along.

Blanche for eating? It can also be eaten raw, roasted or made into "cauliflower" rice. Oh, maybe you mean wrap the leaves around it. I don't think it is necessary, just a color thing.Hawgwild wrote: Cauliflower is near ready but read I need to blanch it first.. . .Scottie

Yep...wrapping the leaves around it is what I meant..They call it blanching...Confused me a little at first... Read that the sun may cause some issues with it and turn the cauliflower more bitter. Anyway i got it wrapped up just in case.. Can't see them doing that in the big commercial fields though.

Back in the day when my grandfather had a "truck farm" (now days called a market garden), blanching cauliflower was part of the gardening experience. Had to regularly check the plants to ensure the growing heads didn't push the leaves out of the rubber bands and expose the head to the sun - couldn't sell green cauliflower.
Have you ever tried self-blanching cauliflower?

The purple cauliflower keep their color if they are roasted. If you make a roast of 1/2 white and 1/2 purple, it makes a very good presentation.
