Kan ik nog voor-zaaien?

Hallo,

Ik ga dit jaar beginnen met de SFG. Ik heb m'n bakken zo'n beetje af, maar het is nog veels te koud om iets te zaaien. Kan ik nu nog voor-zaien? In een bakje in de vensterbank bijv?
Ik dacht aan sla en tomaten enzo. Is het al te laat om dat nog te doen en kan ik beter even wachten en direct in de sfg zaaien of is het toch beter om eerst even binnen al zaad op te kweken? Of kan ik allebei doen?

Hoop dat iemand wat meer hier van weet.

I am indeed a SFG newbie. Actually I didn't do much conventional gardening either.
My question yesterday was about the cold weather we still have here in Holland. It actually snowed last sunday and monday in parts of the country and every night this week we've had between -4 and -2°C (25 - 28°F). So, it is still too cold to sow anything outside. I was wondering if it is too late to sow indoors and get the plants going a bit and plant them outside later. I was thinking of tomato's, lettuce, and peas etc.

My English comes a little short to understand what a pointer or setter is. (I google'd but only sites about dogs where the result )

Peas and lettuce are in the cool weather category. If you think spring is right around the corner, go ahead and plant them. Now would be a good time to start your tomatoes indoors.

My friend, your English vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation are excellent. You've probably received better schooling than the kids in our school systems in the U.S.

I embarrassed myself on another Europe thread by assuming the poster was male. I didn't want to make that mistake again. Indeed, pointer and setter are classes of dogs. Some public restrooms in the states are labeled pointer and setter (sitter) to distinguish male and female restrooms! They do it to be cute and different. I shouldn't have used such an obscure reference, sorry.

The peas and lettuce will have to wait a week or two or so.
Thanks for the compliment on my English, but I work for an American company here in Holland (Eastman Chemical, headquarters in Kingsport, Tennessee) as a chemical engineer, so I see some English e-mails and presetations every now and then.
But the "real" English (or American) remains to be hard to grasp. I do like the sitting / back leg lifting dog thing though.....

Hi, Boffer -- I don't speak Dutch, but maybe I can help translate....

From what I can tell and guess, the folks in the Netherlands are about a
zone 4 or 5...they get the warm waters from the Gulf Stream, but it's
so far north that it still gets really cold -- and the humidity and the
low altitudes just dump a lot of snow on them.

I'm a little further south, just outside Paris, and I think I'm more
like a 6 or 7 (my climate here is pretty similar to the Carolinas). We had a streak of warm weather (in the 50's F) so I got
started with some of the tidying work from the winter, but it's been
raw and bitter this week (30s again, with some really hard freezes), so
the work has stopped until we thaw out again. The tulips and daffodils
are all but jumping out of the beds -- they're as anxious for spring as
we are.

The Dutch are the master linguists of Europe...every Dutch person I know
speaks 3 or 4 languages fluently, and fumbles with a couple more. It's
truly amazing to watch my Dutch chum glide effortlessly between Dutch
with her children, French with her husband, English with me, and German
with another friend of ours...she doesn't even stop for a breath between
the changes. Better than I can do!

For the Foreign boards, though -- you'll do fine so long as you try to
stay away from the idioms and figures of speech...I'm an English teacher
here, and those are the real trouble spots...the words themselves are
no problem, but the meanings are completely lost....

And for measurements: 1 meter is about 1 yard (1 foot is about 0.3
meters)...1 square meter is about 10 square feet...there are 2.5
centimeters in an inch...a liter is about a quart...a kilometer is just
over a half a mile.. To swap out the temperatures from C to F, multiply
times 2 and add 30...for F to C, subtract 30 and divide by 2.

And oh yes -- we use commas where decimal points go in the US, and
decimal points where the commas go. So 1,000 in the US comes out as
1.000....and 1.5 in the US comes out as 1,5 here. We put the dates the other way round, too -- May 10 is written as 10/3 in Europe, and 3/10 in the US...Makes my head ache some days!

None of that is scientifically accurate, but it works pretty well for
making conversions on the fly for normal conversations.

I've forgotten what veggies you were planning to grow this year, I think you told us on the old forum ? There's already a lot you can start inside. At the moment I have peas and sugarsnaps, bellpeppers (well, actually the long, ,pointy type) and swiss chard in a mini-greenhouse in the window, also tomatoes (just last weekend). Spinach and Broad beans are already planted out, in a protective fleece-tunnel. So far they're all doing oke. Broccoli and cauliflower can be started inside, mine are hardening off outside in a cold frame, waiting for the right time to be planted.

I had some round carrots that were supposed to be very winterhardy, and some spring onions (scallions?), the package said you could sow 'em in januari, so I thought, well, it's march now... and I was really really in the mood for sowing something " for real" , so I put some in the soil. If they dedide it's still too cold to sprout, well, what the heck. I can always put some more seeds in later

I voluntarily took three years of high school Latin to avoid studying a spoken language. I just don't have an ear for it. In hindsight, any other language class would have been more interesting than spending a year translating 'Caesar's Gaelic Wars'!

This thread is up to 6 posts now, and I still don't know if PeeVee aka Groet Peter is male or female! Unless I missed a hint. It really doesn't matter; I just didn't want to embarrass myself again. That's another handicap we all have, I assume, not being able to identify foreign language names as one sex or the other. But then again, certain user names present the same problem.

I think we're all getting anxious for spring!

Thanks Mirjam. I have sown tomato's in a window mini-greenhouse since wednesday. I think I will fill up one box this weekend and get some peas and broed beans in the ground (and cover them with plastic). I might also sow some carrots to.
