Another hello, Australia - Perth
And hello.
Been gardening for over 20 years, hydroponics, aquaponics, grew up on a dairy farm
I was recently searching for raised garden bed construction when i stumbled over square foot gardening, had never heard of it before.
Now super intrigued and ready to get started, lots of stupid questions from me coming

Welcome to the Square Foot Garden forum Steve!
I'm sure your questions will be welcomed here, especially at this time of the year when those of us on the North side of the planet need someone to channel our gardening enthusiasm through!
You may find that a lot of your questions can be answered in the book, All New Square Foot Gardening, 3rd Edition, Fully Updated by Mel Bartholomew.
Happy Gardening !

Well, that convinced me to go resize my avatar!
We don't usually have this problem with the avatars. Just the last few weeks it's cropped up. You can "fix" the problem by zooming out (ctl-minus on Window style machines), but of course that makes all the text small too.
We had a prior discussion about wallabies in England. Perhaps you will have some insight into whether they pose a garden hazard. ;-)
Happy Gardening!

Simso, Welcome to the Forum from California, U.S. You are off to a good start by buying a copy of the book. It has been said that row gardeners have the hardest time embracing the SFG method, as they have been gardening the way their parents did, and their grandparents, and their great grand parents. I hope if you decide to proceed that you will be able to adjust. If you have any questions, we are here for you.

Making sure i lay it all out right to start with, typically i rush this stuff,
So far i have cleared a section of my backyard of ground covering and overhead trees, its an older area i have allowed the chickens to hang out during the day. Live in the city.
Today I am mapping the sunlight areas and where it hits, tomorrow will get started on making some raised garden beds and install retic and then next week will get the mix needed and hopefully in next two weeks will be starting to plant out
Currently 26-30" c hee in perth, beautiful weather

Re: Another hello, Australia - Perth
Sismo, Taking the photos is an excellent thing to do before setting up the beds. It's late spring/early summer for you and the sunshine will increase until the December solstice, when it will start decreasing. You can clearly see where the hot weather plants need to be planted. You can increase the minutes/hours of sunshine by raising the beds off the ground 2' but that may not be something you want to invest in at this time. Do make sure you leave isles for you (and the chickens at the end of the season) to access the beds all the way around.
Oh, wait, did I misunderstand? The beds are going to be in the area by the back fence and not the corner of the lawn?

Re: Another hello, Australia - Perth
Correct amundo, would love to use the lawn, but the beds are going onto the fence area, so will likely need to elevate them, currently on the ground i have just short of 6hrs full sunlight, if I elevate the beds I think i can get a bit more
Our sun is pretty harsh here that being said
