Hello!
Hi everyone! I just wanted to pop on and say hello. I used to post here a few years ago and suddenly life (and work) got in the way! I'm going to be resurrecting my SFG next spring and am eager to start planning. I'm also planning to clear some landscaped areas of my property to provide more room for edibles. I plan to retire in 15 months and would like to devote more time to gardening and food storage. It's a love of mine that's I've neglected too long.

Hi Susan, Welcome to the Forum from central CA Zone 9A.
I started SFG when I retired. I found this Forum by accident, bought the 2nd Edition ALL New SFG, and that was all it took.

Re: Hello!
Hi Susan, Welcome to the Forum. Gardening in Zone 9 can be a challenge just staying on top of the watering and fertilizing in the summer. I learned from experience that sticking to the Mel's mix formula is the way to go. It was pretty foreign to me, and I was skeptical that all the ingredients were necessary. I cut corners in the beginning and got away with it in the winter and spring, with plants that required lower demands for water and fertilizer. But Summer rolled around and I had to watch my plants droop over in the heat and struggle to maturity. Stick with the SFG book's formula, and you will be off to a good start. Don't forget that we got your back, so when things come up, just ask anything- there's no judging here, we're pretty good at steering you in the right direction.

Good to be back
Life is good here on Kauai. I had planted a bunch of seeds for asparagus and we now have the wonderful spears popping up. We will harvest now and again in six months. Our lettuces and other greens are thriving as well as mung beans, Emirate pole beans and kabocha squash.

Hi - I'm new
Hi Susan; this is Kat in North Central Florida. I'm new here, and I've been retired about a year. Congratulations!! I'm finally having time to do the gardening I've always wanted to do. Got out my copy of Square Foot Gardening and am reading it cover to cover and I have 3 gardens going and getting ready to put in another one.

We've put in a fall garden and I'm fighting off the caterpillars - check the leaves every day for eggs and critters. So far looking fairly good, but the eggplants all got cut off by cutworms and critters (maybe rats, racoons, ???). We're putting cages around the little plants now and covers over the beds so the moths don't get to them at night. i'm in North Florida in the Gainesville area.
I've had gardens before, but not for a long time, so I feel pretty much like a newbie, but learning so much by just observing. All vegetables now, but I want to venture into flowering plants for the pollinators. Having a great time.
What about you? Where are you from and what's in your garden?
- Kat
