Mel's Mix Mistake Empty Mel's Mix Mistake

Post  AceoStar on 5/19/2020, 10:14 pm

Hey all!

I follow a similar method for making most of my batches of Mel's mix. 1 5gal bucket of mixed compost, 1 peat, one vermiculite. This weekend, I made two batches and put them in near identical draining containers. After a ton of rain last night, one of them held up as expected, the other looks like this in the video below. :p Do I just need to add vermiculite when I run into an overly soupy mix? Maybe I didn't mix it well enough?

Is drainage (holes etc) in that soupy pot the same as the other pot.

Yeah the holes are pretty similar. I even dug deep in the soupy one and made sure the holes were clear. When I did, soupy mix ran out of the hole but stopped eventually.

No, don't add any more vermiculite. For some reason, the one pot didn't drain. I suspect it was what it was sitting on, blocking the drainage. Relocate it or find something to prop up the pot, even like 4 bricks. I line the bottoms of any pots or buckets with drainage holes that I use with weed fabric, and then fill with Mel's Mix. That way, I don't lose any of the precious MM out the bottom.

Thanks all. I think you were right. The drain was clogged, I rooted around and now it did this :p

So much Mel's mix wasted as it poured out the hole. :p I do have weed fabric tho so I'll relocate this out temporarily and give that a shot. Very Happy

I know it was painful to watch the MM running out the drain hole. But, I think everyone has a story of a personal learning experience.

True that!

Weed barrier seems to be working pretty good. Thanks again!
