Well, the freeze got me.
Over the last week or so, we had bought bought some beautiful plants and we saw the temp was on it's way down so I put plastic over my hoop houses and hoped that would protect them.....
Well, When I checked the plants earlier, they were lost due to the cold. We had 29*F this morning but yesterday when I checked the soil temp inside of the hoop houses, it was up to 73* F. I had the small pots buried in the warm soil but it didn't save them. Guess I should have known better.
Every year I say, "I'm NOT buying plants too early this year".... Yea RIGHT. I'm NOT replacing those plants for another week or so.
My Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbage are doing fine and they were not in the hoop houses.

Sorry to hear that, MrB! I lost all of my pepper plants in the cold frame last week when it unexpectedly dropped down into the teens. I think Mother Nature is off of her Prozac! I have new seeds started on a heat pad under the lights.

Oh man! That is bad! I hate that...I use May 15th, I know it is very conservative, but it usually works. You are a bit south of me though. Sorry to hear that....

Bummer!MrBooker wrote:Well, When I checked the plants earlier, they were lost due to the cold.

I lost a whole month of my fall garden last year, when we got a hard frost 4 weeks early. It never froze again all winter, but the damage was already done.

Put a couple of lit 8 hour candles in the hoop house on a ceramic plate at about 21.00 hrs each forecast frosty night , they should keep the hoop house frost free .
I do the same in my 10 x 12 x 8 foot ridge glasshouse I light one 2 inch x 8 inch long candle about 21.00 hrs. Sometimes if it's estimated it's going to be well into the - oC figures I'll put two in there .
