I planted two tomatoes in my SFG and even had my husband build a trellis for them. And now I'm realizing they are bush tomatoes. tomato suckers - I think I plantd the wrong kind of tomatoes..now what? Icon_sad

Do I pull them out and pot them somewhere?? Leave them?

I also made the mistake of pruning one of them half to death and left the other alone. They are both growing like crazy. The bush is taking over the garden. Ugh!

I'm (obviously) a total novice at gardening and I'm so mad at myself for not researching these things more thoroughly.

Any advice??

I don't have any advice because I did the exact same thing. Mine isn't taking over the garden yet though. I hope it works out for both of us Smile

Just keep pruning and tie it off to the trellis. It'll be ok. You CAN get even a bush type tomato down to a main stalk. I have two vining types and two bush types. We'll see....I think it's gonna be TIGHT, but this is my experiment year.

Pruning a bush type tomatoe only reduces the yeild. The best thing would be to pot them and replant an indeterminate type.

Please do not prune a bush tomato--the yields will be pitiful (been there, done that). If it is crowding out other plants, either *carefully* dig it up and replant elsewhere or pull up what's in the surrounding squares to give it more room. Bush tomatoes need 2x2 feet -- 4 squares. You can cheat a bit by planting it close to the edge of the garden, but it still will need more than 1 square.

tomato suckers - I think I plantd the wrong kind of tomatoes..now what? Empty sooo many more questions about my tomato dilemna!

Post  staciz 5/24/2010, 4:35 pm

thanks so much everyone!! thinking this through a little more...

the two tomatoes are next to each other. on one side there is an eggplant (which is mostly shaded by the overgrown tomato i did NOT prune). on the other side (of the pruned one) is a dying cucumber.

so should i dig up the big one (unpruned) and pot it somewhere, and then also dig up dying cucumber...this would leave the pruned tomato plant alone in the middle of three squares.

should i leave both squares on either side of it empty? even though it is the one i pruned? is there something small that could grow there that doesn't need a lot of sun?

also, how big of a pot do i need for the one i dig up? am i going to need more mel's mix for that? i don't have any left and can't invest in making more...what would be an alternate?

and HOW do i go about digging it up w/o killing it? it already has 3 tomatoes on it!! i don't want to hurt it tomato suckers - I think I plantd the wrong kind of tomatoes..now what? Icon_cry

So what did you end up doing? I'm a SFG newbie and realized this weekend that I've done the same thing. The plants are growing so well but my box is only 8'x2' with no space to let them grow!
