Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I've had 2 great seasons with carrots and 2 total failures. I'm going to start keeping better records in case the answer is simply timing or weather. It couldn't possibly be me.sanderson wrote:Mark, last year was the best I ever did with carrots. So, take heart as I think one gets better at it each year. Which probably tells you how poorly I've done at carrot growing. Went into the stir fry at 1:30pm. Gone, but not forgotten.

Today I had some really delish sweet pickles made with cukes from the SFG, YUM! I have never made sweet pickles before, they are really delish!

Tomatoes, but they're running down. Only about a week's worth left. If we hadn't had that hard freeze in November, they'd still be growing in the garden. As it is, I've thrown at least a hundred of them over the fence for the little critters.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I was talking about the toms in the fridge, but look what I found still growing outside, after a hard freeze and a month of short days, cold nights, and nothing but clouds and rain. This is my 4th of July tomato plant, that I've been bragging about since summer. I have other plants with green tomatoes still hanging, but this one actually ripened all these after we thought it was dead. The toms of various sizes are puckered, but still sweet and juicy. Amazing!countrynaturals wrote:Tomatoes, but they're running down. Only about a week's worth left. If we hadn't had that hard freeze in November, they'd still be growing in the garden. Same here. I found another bowlful from other dead plants. I had no idea they'd still ripen on the vine under such adverse circumstances.Scorpio Rising wrote:Tomatoes

OK, CN, most of the US cannot propagate maters right now! And the grocery store versions are just not up to our high standard (I mean, we know the BRIX ratings of our various varieties, etc...).countrynaturals wrote:Same here. Onions & garlic only today I'm afraid .. the dreadful 3 months of mild & exceedingly wet weather has blown the brussels sprouts , & put black mould on almost all the small broccoli heads & turned a lot of the leeks rusty .
If things carry on like this I'll have to be planting clear plastic umbrellas as well as my normal seeds.

Get your thermometer out and sow when it is the right temperature so that they will germinate before they either rot or die of thirst . I had to re-sow twice this year . First it suddenly got too cold about four days after I'd sown the carrots , nothing came up in the bed after 28 days … the seeds most likely succumbed to wet rot . .
Then for a different bed I broadcast the rest of a packet of 1,000 seed that were three year old home stored seed , thinking , " If I get any carrots I'll count myself lucky " .. The ground temp was 16 oC , nice & moist . Almost every sodding carrot seed germinated by day 18 , we've just started harvesting them .
I'll be clearing the bed tomorrow if it is not raining and store them outside under cover in deep sand trays .

Ate some of the mustard pickled zucchini that I made this fall with some ham yesterday—very tasty! Really wasn’t sure what to expect, but I liked it a lot. Perfect with a salty cured meat.
Also really pretty!

Salad with fresh leaf lettuce and radishes from the cold frame, air fryer sweet potato fries, and baked Red Kuri squash complimented the grilled sirloin tip steak.

Dinner included Pickled Beets, Green Beans from the freezer, Potato Salad, and Barbecue Chicken Breasts (thanks Instant Pot!). Love having garden vegetables in the dead of winter.

Poblano Peppers with Chorizo, also has rice, corn, and tomatoes (canned) and cheese. My first, from freezer, this was my first year growing a poblano (Ancho) pepper! I loved them! Just the right kick...In the oven at the moment, smells WONDERFUL!!!
