Not new to gardening, just new to SFG and so far I LOVE IT!!

I have 8 raised beds in so far with 6 more that just need to be built. I didn’t find SFG until after I got all the materials for the raised beds so most of them will be deeper than SFG normally is but of course that’ll work just fine.

I love Mel’s Mix...but quite tempted to swap spaghnum for coco coir...but I haven’t yet. Just tempted. I like that it is renewable and does pretty much what the peat does.

This fall I have planted beets (2 varieties), carrots (8 varieties), kale (2 varieties), broccoli, garlic (3 varieties), lettuce, calendula, cabbage (2 varieties), and radishes (3 varieties).

I love to plant unique varieties...you won’t catch me planting an early girl tomato, for instance. Nothing against early girls, they’re just so well known and I want the never find it in the grocery store variety.

I’m 95% organic, I fudged on the garlic bulbs but I’ll grow organically.

Anyhoooooo...this gardening thing just feeds my soul. Good to be here - I am thrilled to find this forum. It’s been super helpful already!

Can’t wait to get to know some of you!

Welcome aboard, IAmPrimus, from Ohio!  It sounds like you are on a roll, well on your way to some great gardens!   I, too, grow organically, and have for the past 5+ decades.  I grow heirlooms, rather than hybrids, and love finding "new" ones that I have never seen before. I use Coir in all of my beds, and have had excellent results with it.

Coir is an acceptable substitute for SFG Mel's Mix.

Canadian peat moss is a managed, renewable resource. Sort of like cork trees in Italy are carefully managed for decades/centuries. Here is an article to help you make your decision.

Hi, Jas, I think your idea of growing the more individual plants is a great idea. I believe the original varieties hare more nutritious and tasty than the ones in the grocery store

I am going try and follow your lead next year.  You will find if you use the search guide in the top left hand corner of this page, that there are lots of threads about more individual plants. Look out also for seed swops.

Hello, IAmPrimus, from a fellow NorCal gardener (Redding). We're having near-perfect weather for a fall garden this year. Very Happy I'm like you with the unique varieties, but sometimes I have to go with the old-reliables -- like dwarf curly kale -- I can just plant it and forget it -- then harvest every day for a year. Cool Looking forward to your posts and pics. SFG Newbie in NorCal!! 3170584802
